I'm Stephanie Skandaris. Qatar is condemning Israeli strikes that targeted senior leaders of Hamas in Doha. The Qatari Foreign Ministry calls the attack a criminal assault that violates international laws.
Starting point is 00:00:49 Israel's military says the strike on Hamas leaders who use Qatar as a headquarters outside Gaza had been planned for months. It says the U.S. was informed ahead of the attack, but that it acted alone. Hamas says its members survived the strike. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres accuses Israel of undermining ceasefire efforts. I condemn this fragrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar.
Starting point is 00:01:17 All parties must work towards achieving a permanent ceasefire, not destroying it. Qatar alongside Egypt has been a major. mediator in ceasefire talks for the past two years. Nepal's Prime Minister has resigned after 22 people were killed in demonstrations against corruption and a social media ban that's now been scrapped. Protesters have stormed the nation's parliament building lighting it on fire. Rebecca Bundin reports on the unfolding political crisis. Smoke could be seen billowing over the capital Kathmandu amid heightened levels of unrest. Protesters blocked roads. smashed windows and set fire to government buildings and homes of politicians.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Jubilant crowds carrying the Nepalese flag gathered on the grounds of the country's parliament, shrouded in clouds of dark smoke. Several politicians are reported to have gone into hiding, fearing for their safety. With the Prime Minister stepping down, the country's president, a ceremonial head of state, urged the protesters to engage in talks. but the largely young demonstrators seem determined to vent their anger. This protester says they need change and new young leaders free of corruption. Rebecca Bunzin for CBC News, Mumbai.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Ukraine's president is pleading for more air defenses and new sanctions on Moscow after another deadly attack. Philodomier Zelenskyy says Russia's Putin in front. interprets Western inaction as permission to continue his war. A Russian bomb killed 24 people in a village in eastern Ukraine. Most of them, retirees. They've been standing in line to collect their monthly pensions. Many others are injured. The area is just a few kilometers from the front line
Starting point is 00:03:10 as Russia continues to push further west. Barry, Ontario has declared a state of emergency to address homeless encampments across the city. Barry now joins several other cities that have done the same in the past few years. Mayor Alex Nuttall says the province has given the city more funding to tackle the problem, but that still isn't enough. We do not have a funding problem. We have an inability to be effective problem with the money that's been allocated. It takes too long to deliver the services for rehabilitation and shelter that have been promised to us the people of Barry.
Starting point is 00:03:43 The city of Barry does not have control over this emergency until now. The mayor says Barry will support those seeking help but will not allow encampments to continue on public property. Well, Halloween candy may already be sprouting up on store shelves, but you might find a harder time getting a pumpkin to carve this year. That's because pumpkin growers in several provinces say their crop is lower this season. They're blaming the lack of rain this summer. Greg McKenzie owns McKenzie produce on Prince Edward Island. He says his pumpkins weigh at least a third less than usual. The great big jack-lanterns that everybody's waiting for
Starting point is 00:04:21 are going to be in limited supply this year. All crops are going to struggle this year. Just, I'll be 100% honest. It's going to be a trying season by the time things are set and done. McKenzie says his farm doesn't have an irrigation system. He's delayed his pumpkin harvest by a week, hoping for some late rain.
Starting point is 00:04:39 His farm plans to adapt by focusing on local customers instead of sending pumpkins to other provinces. And that's your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Stephanie Skanderas.
