I'm Joe Cummings. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is calling for an emergency NATO meeting.
Starting point is 00:00:43 After as many as 19 Russian drones violated the country's airspace overnight. The majority were shut down with Tusk saying the prospect of a large military conflict is, quote, closer now than at any time since the Second World War. Anna Cunningham reports. The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says a large number of Russian drones violated Polish airspace, describing it as posing a direct threat. Tusk says this is the first time Russian drones have been shot down over the territory of a NATO country. Polish, NATO and Dutch pilots are understood to have been involved.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Tusk says Poland is most likely dealing with a large-scale provocation. Russian attacks on Ukraine have increased in recent weeks. Poland has previously scrambled its own air force along its long eastern border with Ukraine. But until last night, that was only as a precaution. Prime Minister Tusk says he is in constant contact with the head of NATO, Mark Rutter. There remains uncertainty as to whether Russia's actions were deliberate. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Meanwhile, Mark Ruta is saying a full assessment of violation is currently underway, and he's calling Russia's actions absolutely reckless.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Now to the response to Israel's strike this week on the Hamas negotiating team in Doha. The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wants sanctions issued on Israel, and she's also looking for a partial suspension of all Israeli EU trade. As for Washington, Willie Lowry reports. President Donald Trump, not happy with Israel's strike on Hamas, inside Qatar, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. I'm not thrilled about the whole situation. It's not a good situation. The president, not alone in his criticism, several U.S. leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders, also irate. Sanders on social media calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. Others, however, a little more supportive of Israel's actions.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he said he. spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortly after the strike and added he would always be a partner to Israel. President Trump made clear, though, that this was Israel's strike. And while he said he felt very badly about the location of it, he added that the target allegedly Hamas leadership was a worthy goal. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. Out of next week's return to Parliament, Prime Minister Mark Carney and the entire Liberal Caucus are meeting today in Edmonton. And for Carney, the visit to Alberta also means a meeting with the Premier.

Last week, Carney announced the delay of the electric vehicle sales mandate for at least a year. Today, Alberta's premier will ask him to go even further to protect her province's oil and gas sector. Olivia Stefanovic, CBC News, Edmonton. We're expecting Ontario to reveal some details today on its plans to begin building a road system into the ring of fire. The mineral-rich region, some 500 kilometers north of Thunder Bay, is some 500 kilometers north of Thunder Bay. Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney both want to mine the region as part of the country's ongoing response to the U.S. trade war. And that is the world this hour.
