Starting point is 00:00:45 Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Canada stands in full solidarity with Poland. Anand's comments are among many being issued today by NATO countries in the wake of Russian drones violating Polish airspace overnight. In London, here's British Defense Secretary John Healy. They were reckless. They were attack on NATO airspace and on NATO sovereignty. And we will stand together and we will support Poland through NATO to resist those in the future. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is saying the majority of the 19 drones were shot down. And he says the prospect of a large military conflict is, quote, closer now that.
Starting point is 00:01:30 at any time since the Second World War. Anna Cunningham reports. The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says this is the first time Russian drones have been shot down over the territory of a NATO country. Polish, NATO and Dutch pilots are understood to have been involved. Tusk says Poland is most likely dealing with a large-scale provocation. Russian attacks on Ukraine have increased in recent weeks. Poland has previously scrambled its own air force along its long eastern border with Ukraine. But until last night, that was only as a precaution. Prime Minister Tusk says he is in constant contact with the head of NATO, Mark Rutter.
Starting point is 00:02:13 There remains uncertainty as to whether Russia's actions were deliberate. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Now to the Middle East and following the Israeli strike on the Hamas negotiating team in Doha, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced plans to issue sanctions on Israel. She's also looking for a partial suspension of Israeli EU trade. Prime Minister Mark Carney is calling the strike an intolerable expansion of violence in the region. In Paris today, on the streets of Paris, right across the country, it is a day of protest. They're being called to block everything demonstrations.
Starting point is 00:02:57 and they're being met with a deployment of more than 80,000 police officers. A protest campaign is in response to, among other things, public spending cuts being proposed by the government of Emmanuel Macron. Ahead of next week's return to Parliament, Prime Minister Mark Carney and the entire Liberal Caucus are meeting today in Edmonton. Starting point is 00:03:27 his plan for the fall sitting of Parliament in a meeting he has scheduled later today with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. The one-on-one happening on the eve of Carney's first major projects announcement, an attempt to shore up the Canadian economy as it slows during the trade war with the U.S. This is not business as usual. Why? Because our biggest, you know, our neighbor, a biggest training partner, ally is turning its back on Canada. Finance Minister Francois Philippe Champagne is tasked with tabling and selling Carney's first budget in October. Last week, Carney announced the delay of the electric vehicle sales mandate for at least a year.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Today, Alberta's premier will ask him to go even further to protect her province's oil and gas sector. Olivia Estefanovich, CBC News, Edmonton. We're expecting details today on the Ontario government's plan to build a road system into the province's so-called. called Ring of Fire. The mineral-rich region is about 500 kilometers north of Thunder Bay. Like Premier Doug Ford, Prime Minister Carney is eager to greenlight a number of mining projects in the area.
