I'm Kate McGilfrey. A Vancouver judge has ruled the man accused of killing 11 people in a car ramming attack is mentally fit to stand trial. He now also faces 31 new charges.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Kaiji Adam Lowe allegedly drove his SUV into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in April. Yasmin Renea reports. After hearing evidence about Kaiji Adam Lowe's mental health, a provincial court judge found he is mentally fit to stand trial. The reasons behind the decision cannot be shared because of a publication ban. Court heard evidence from two expert witness forensic psychiatrists. People charged with criminal offenses in Canada are presumed fit to stand trial unless found otherwise. At issue was not the state of Lowe's mental health at the time of the alleged attack, but his present condition.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Lowe was arrested in April and charged with 11 counts of second-degree murder after he allegedly drove his SUV into a crowd at the Lapu-Lapu-Day Festival. 11 people died and dozens more were injured. Lowe is now facing 31 additional charges of attempted murder in relation to the surviving victims of the alleged attack. He has been ordered to remain in custody. Yasmilanea, CBC News, Vancouver. Police in Toronto have charged a teenager with first-degree murder in the death of a young boy last month.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Chief Myron Demkew says 8-year-old Javei Roy was killed in his own home in the city's West End. He was at home when a group of people. People brazenly fired guns outside of his apartment building. A straight bullet struck him while he was in bed. In bed in his own room, the place that should have been the safest. Demkew says the accused was 15 at the time of the murder. He was found in possession of a loaded gun that was modified to fire automatically. Two other suspects, both 17 at the time, are still on the run and are also facing first-degree murder charges.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Teachers in Alberta are poised to go on strike as early as October 6th. The Alberta Teachers Association says that's their deadline for a negotiated settlement with the province to be reached. Overcrowded classrooms and salary increases are the main sticking points here. The province has offered salary increases of 12% over four years. It's also pledging to hire 3,000 new teachers. Premier Danielle Smith says a wage increase higher than what's already on the table puts that hiring plan. at risk. Canada and its NATO allies are in talks with Poland after Russian drones violated Polish airspace last night. It happened during a Russian attack on Ukraine involving hundreds
Starting point is 00:03:06 of drones. Moscow says it hadn't planned to hit any targets in Poland. Anna Cunningham reports. Poland's foreign minister Radislaw Sikorsky says he believes the number of drones makes it unlikely to have been a technical error. There were 19 breaches and it simply defies imagination. That could be accidental. Prime Minister Donald Tusk says his country is at its closest to open conflict since World War II. Ukraine's president, Vladimir Zelensky, says his military recorded Russian drones moving towards the Polish border. The United Nations has expressed concern about Russian attacks on Ukraine, widening to other countries. Stefan Dujarak is the UN spokesperson.

Poland says it has received offers of support for its air defense from European allies. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. American conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot during an event at a Utah university. Several witnesses reported hearing a single shot and seeing Kirk grab the left side of his neck. Kirk's the co-founder of Turning Point USA. nonprofit organization advocates for conservative politics on high school, college, and university campuses. Kirk has been taken to hospital. He's reported to be in critical condition. The college says
