I'm Kate McGilfrey. U.S. Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk is dead. The influential and controversial political activist was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University.
Starting point is 00:00:44 This is a dark day for our state. It's a tragic day for our nation. I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination. Utah governor Spencer Cox says a person of interest is in custody and the investigation is ongoing. Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA, which holds conservative debates on campuses across the country. The university says one shot was fired from just under 200 meters away. In a social media post announcing Kirk's death, President Donald Trump, said the 31-year-old was loved and admired by all. A toddler is dead after a vehicle crashed into a daycare center north of Toronto.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Six other children were also injured, one with life-threatening injuries, as well as three staff members. Mr. Constable Kevin Nubria, with York Regional Police, spoke to reporters at the scene. It is still early investigation, but I can't tell you that a man in his 70s has since been arrested in relation to this incident. Information right now has led us to determine that this was not a deliberate act. The vehicle was in the parking lot at the time, and for reasons unknown, drove through the front of the window. The child who died was 18 months old. A Vancouver judge has ruled that the man accused of killing 11 people in a hospital.
Starting point is 00:02:00 a car ramming attack is mentally fit to stand trial. He now also faces 31 new charges. Kaiji Adam Lowe allegedly drove his SUV into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in April. Yasmin Renea reports. After hearing evidence about Kaiji Adam Lowe's mental health, a provincial court judge found he is mentally fit to stand trial. The reasons behind the decision cannot be shared because of a publication ban. Court heard evidence from two expert witness forensic psychiatrists. People charged with criminal offenses in Canada are presumed fit to stand trial unless found otherwise. At issue was not the state of Lowe's mental health at the time of the alleged attack, but his present condition. Lowe was arrested in April and charged with 11 counts of second-degree murder after he
Starting point is 00:02:44 allegedly drove his SUV into a crowd at the Lapulapu Day Festival. 11 people died and dozens more were injured. Lowe is now facing 31 additional charges of attempted murder in relation to the surviving victims of the alleged attack. He has been ordered to. to remain in custody. Yasmil Ganea, CBC News, Vancouver. An Edmonton woman pleaded guilty today to the manslaughter of an eight-year-old girl. She was initially charged with first-degree murder.
Starting point is 00:03:11 The victim's family is furious that the charge was downgraded, as are the Edmonton police. Julia Wong has the story. We don't feel like justice was served here today. Outrage outside the Edmonton courthouse from the relatives of an eight-year-old girl killed two years ago. Today, the woman accused in her death pleaded guilty to manslaughter as part of a plea deal.
Starting point is 00:03:33 She was originally charged with first-degree murder. Neither the woman nor the victim can be identified because of a publication ban. Edmonton police have taken the unprecedented step of asking Alberta justice officials to pull out of the plea deal, saying to go ahead would be a significant miscarriage of justice. Intram Edmonton police chief warned Dreichol. So I understand the concern that this may be overstepped by the police, but it really is a matter of last resort to kind of speak for a victim
Starting point is 00:03:59 that can't speak for themselves here. A spokesperson for the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service tells CBC News it would be inappropriate to comment on the case. Julia Wong, CBC News, Edmonton. And finally, NASA rover has found the strongest evidence yet of ancient life on Mars.
Starting point is 00:04:23 The rock sample found on the bottom of once was once, What was once a lake shows possible signs of ancient microbial life. The rock dubbed the Sapphire Canyon sample was found in a place called the Bright Angel rock formation. The lead study author is urging some caution about the results, saying that what they're seeing in this rock could also have been caused by chemical processes. And that is your world this hour.
