Starting point is 00:00:26 The debater's 20th anniversary season, comedy, worth arguing about. From CBC News, The World This Hour. I'm Kate McGilvery. Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled his first list of big nation-building projects that Ottawa will fast track for approvals. The projects are aimed at boosting the Canadian economy as it grapples with the Trump trade war.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Olivia Stefanovic has the details. We used to build big things in this country. It's time to get back at it. Prime Minister Mark Carney promising to boost the slowing Canadian economy with five major infrastructure and energy projects across the country. We will build with Canadian steel, Canadian lumber, Canadian aluminum. Carney's initial list includes the second phase of LNG Canada in northern British Columbia, a new nuclear project in southern Ontario, a copper and zinc mine in east central Saskatchewan,
Starting point is 00:01:24 along with the expansions to the port of Montreal, and the existing red-criss copper mine in northwest B.C. The projects are already quite advanced and have gone through indigenous consultation. Carney says these projects will require federal dollars to spur private investment, but isn't yet saying how much. Carney says a second set of projects will be announced by the Grey Cup in mid-November. Olivia Stavanovitch, CBC News, Edmonton. The man accused in a deadly crash at a daycare center north of Trump,
Starting point is 00:01:57 Toronto has been released on bail. An 18-month-old child was killed when the suspect in his 70s drove his car into the building in Richmond Hill. A second child is in critical condition in hospital. Five more children and three staff members also were injured. The man's facing one charge of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. His bail conditions include an order that he not drive any motor vehicles. Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people. U.S. President Donald Trump says he is posthumously awarding a presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Starting point is 00:02:39 The high-profile commentator and close Trump ally was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah yesterday. A manhunt for the suspect is still underway. Bo Mason is commissioner of Utah's Department of Public Safety. Suspect blended in well with a college institution. That individual appears to be of college age. We are confident in our abilities to track that individual. Authorities have recovered a high-powered rifle in a wooded area where they believe the suspect fled. The FBI has also released photos of a person of interest and announced a $100,000 award for any information leading to the killer's arrest.
Starting point is 00:03:18 British Prime Minister Kier Starrmer has fired the country's ambassador. to the United States for his links to Jeffrey Epstein. It's being revealed that Peter Mandelson wrote a letter to the convicted pedophile calling him, quote, My Best Pal. There's also a similar email. The British Foreign Office says it was not aware of the extent of the relationship when Mandelson was appointed ambassador. And from pop hits to pup sensations, a pet adoption campaign has gone viral thanks to Sabrina Carpenter. Humane Canada and the Toronto Humane Society say almost. all the dogs featured in their ads have now been adopted.
Starting point is 00:03:55 After they caught the singer's attention, Michelle's song tells us more. Sabrina Carpenter's latest album, Man's Best Friend, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 100. And for Humane Canada and Toronto Humane Society, it was inspiration for a now viral social media campaign called Man's true best friend. It had photos of dogs mimicking the pop stars album art. Phil Nichols is the CEO of Toronto Humane Society. And it's just helped raise awareness about the challenges that exist in shelters across North America right now over population. Carpenter liked and shared the post, and now less than two weeks after it launched, almost all the dogs featured have been adopted with ongoing interest for others.
