From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Kate McGilvery. Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled his first list of nation-building projects. He made the announcement in Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:00:40 We used to build big things in this country, and we used to build them quickly. It's time to get back at it, and it's time to get on with it. That starts with getting out of the way. That list includes an expansion of a liquefied natural gas facility in Kittamat, BC, A new facility to produce small modular nuclear reactors in Ontario, an expansion of the port of Montreal, a copper mine in Saskatchewan, and the expansion of a copper and gold mine in northwestern BC. Carney says a second list of projects will be released by mid-November.
Starting point is 00:01:16 The suspect in a deadly crash at a daycare center north of Toronto has been released on bail. A vehicle crashed into the building yesterday, killing a toddler and leaving a second child in critical condition. Itlmusa has the latest. Outside First Root's Early Education Academy, a makeshift memorial is growing. NSUV crashed into the daycare yesterday, killing a one-and-a-half-year-old boy and injuring six other children. I think there should be barriers. Local resident Ruth Brayness came to the site this morning to lay flowers.
Starting point is 00:01:49 There should be gates. There should be security. Emerson Bekirovsky says he feels the pain the victims are going through. My daughter goes to the school and she's been here since she was 18. 18 months and thankfully she's okay. My wife picked her up yesterday and she's thankfully doing well and at home. A 70-year-old man was charged with one count of dangerous operation causing death and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm. He was granted bail at a court hearing this morning and one of the conditions he must follow is not operating a motor vehicle. Idle Musa, CBC News, Toronto.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Authorities in Utah say Charlie Kirk's killer is still at large, but they are making progress in their search. The FBI released images of a person of interest. They show a young man in a black shirt with a baseball hat and sunglasses. The popular conservative commentator was fatally shot during a rally yesterday at a university. Willie Lowry has more. Combing through the woods near Utah Valley University, investigators said they found the rifle the shooter used to kill Charlie Kirk.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Here's Bo Mason, the Commissioner for Utah's Department of Public Safety. After the shooting, we were able to track his movements as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building, and fled off of the campus and into a neighborhood. Authorities adding, they believe the suspect is male and college age. Kirk's death continues to reverberate across this country. U.S. President Donald Trump plans to bestow the country's highest civilian honor on the Young Conservative. I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom. No date has been set, but the President said he expected a large turnout for the event.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. Brazil's former President Jaya Bolsonaro has been convicted of plotting a coup to stay in power. The Nation Supreme Court also found him guilty of being part of an armed criminal organization. The populist leader had been accused of attempting to overturn the 2022 presidential elections that he lost to Lula de Silva. Bolsonaro denies his involvement in the plot and calls the court case a witch hunt. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed off on a controversial plan to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank. The so-called E-1 project will cut off East Jerusalem from other Palestinian lands.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Netanyahu saying there will never be a Palestinian land. Netanyahu saying there will never be a Palestinian state. The expansion would create a circle of Israeli settlements around East Jerusalem, closing off the possibility of their ever being a contiguous Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem.
