the world this hour. I'm Claude Fagg. We begin in Orem, Utah. Good morning, ladies and
gentlemen. We got him. That's Governor Spencer Cox announcing this morning an arrest in the
shooting death of Charlie Kirk. On the evening of September 11th, a family member of Tyler
Robinson reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with
information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident.
The suspect has now been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah.
Cox were joined by state public security officials and the FBI,
including FBI director Cash Patel,
who praised the swift work of law enforcement that led to the arrest.
And just last night, the suspect was taken into custody at 10 p.m. local time.
In less than 36 hours, 33 to be precise, thanks to the full weight of the federal government
and leading out with the partners here in the state of Utah,
Governor Cox, the suspect was apprehended in historic time period.
According to reports, the suspect's father worked with a pastor
to encourage his son to surrender.
Governor Cox says he expects charges will be laid against Robinson today.
CBC News has learned new details about Prime Minister Mark Carney's plan
to address anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.
A source says his government could propose new offenses under the criminal
code. As early as next Tuesday, the legislation would make it illegal to intentionally and willfully
obstruct people from accessing places of worship, schools, or community centers. Here's Justice
Minister General Sean Fraser. Think of a synagogue, a mosque, a church, but also community centers,
schools, or specific places that are designed specifically for a given community. We want to add
criminal provisions that would prohibit the obstruction of those facilities and the intimidation
of the people seeking to use that.
A source says the government also plans to propose a separate offense
for anyone who is motivated by hatred to break the law.
Ottawa's chief data officer says he believes there will be some job cuts
as a result of artificial intelligence in the public service.
Stephen Burt says he thinks the effects will vary widely
and will be job-specific and says the government will try to offer employees
opportunities to retrain and transition into new jobs.
Later this morning, a judge will decide whether protesters in the woods on southern Vancouver Island will have to leave.
The group set up a camp to prevent old growth logging, but local First Nations want them out.
Liz MacArthur has more.
Cougar camp was set up nearly three weeks ago in the Walburne Valley.
It's about three hours drive from Victoria.
Will O'Connell is one of about a dozen activists who want to protect old growth trees from being cut down.
It's one of the most intact valleys on the whole island.
island. It's in this crazy limbo where a lot of it isn't protected, yet it's also not logged.
The area set to be logged is on Pachydat territory and the nation wants the protesters out,
something five other nearby First Nations support. That includes the Hueyat. They own a 35% stake
in the logging company, Sabokin Forestry. Michelle Corfield speaks for the group of First Nations.
The Pachidot have asked the protesters to leave and they've chosen to disrespect the decisions of
by staying. This morning, a judge is said to decide whether to grant the logging company
an injunction that would order the protesters to clear the way for logging activity to resume.
Liz MacArthur, CBC News, CBC,
The Prime Minister of Albania has made a historic appointment.
Edirama says his cabinet now includes the world's first ever artificial intelligence minister,
not a minister of artificial intelligence, a minister that is artificial intelligence.
artificial. The AI advisor is called Jella, which is Albanian for Sun. It will be in charge of
public funding projects and fighting corruption in public tenders. The prime minister says
this will guarantee decisions will be made 100% free of corruption. And that is your world this
hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Faye.
Thank you.
