Starting point is 00:00:40 I'm Claude Fag. The widow of Charlie Kirk is speaking out. Erica Kirk gave a live stream statement last night, honoring her husband and vowing to continue his work. It comes as officials in the U.S. encourage calm in the wake of Kirk's fatal shooting. Steve Futterman has more from Orem, Utah. The search is over, but
Starting point is 00:01:00 Question still remain. 22-year-old Tyler Robinson is in jail, being held without bail. The Utah Attorney General says it's not yet been determined if prosecutors will seek the death penalty, which is an option in Utah. There were more vigils held last night, and late yesterday, the widow of Charlie Kirk, made her first public statement. The evildoers responsible for my husband's assassination have no idea what they have done. Erica Kirk said the movement started by her husband. husband will continue. The movement my husband built will not die. It won't. I refuse to let that happen. It's still not exactly clear what triggered Tyler Robinson to allegedly kill Charlie Kirk.
Starting point is 00:01:43 In recent years, he became more interested in politics and in the last few weeks made comments about Kirk, calling him hateful. Robinson will be formally charged next week. Steve Futterman for CBC News, Orham, Utah. Nepal has sworn in its first female Prime Minister after a week of political turmoil in the country. Sushila Karki, taking the oath of office late yesterday. Karki is a former Chief Justice and known for a hardline stance against corruption. Her appointment comes after widespread youth led protests against the former government. The upheaval was sparked by a social media ban that has since been scrapped.
Starting point is 00:02:24 51 people were killed and more than 1,300 others injured. Karki was the preferred choice of the protesters who cited her reputation for honesty and integrity. Changes to the number of international students Canadian institutions can take in are still having an impact. As the second school year affected by the cap kicks into gear, the effects are being felt by Canadian and international students alike. Deanna Sumanak Johnson hit some campuses to talk to students. We can already see there's been some cuts that are happening to the work study. programs. Even at the University of Toronto, the richest institution in Canada, students like Mo Khan say they're observing subtle changes. It's the second school year affected by the
Starting point is 00:03:08 caps on international students, introduced by the federal government in early 2024 to, among other things, reduced competition for housing. Part of the problem, Canadian institutions this year got fewer international students than they were actually allowed under the cap, as revealed by statistics on study permits. We need international students. Peter Halpin, Executive Director of the Council of Atlantic Universities, says the impacts are felt in both short and long term. They are our future citizens, our business leaders, our health care professionals.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Leaders like him are hopeful for a conversation with the federal government to settle on a number of international students acceptable to all. Deanna Sumanack Johnson, CBC News, Toronto. A Canadian track star has strong. Brook Gold at the World Athletics Championships. Racewalker Evan Dunphy of Richmond, B.C., crossed the finish line first in the men's 35-kilometer event in Tokyo yesterday in just over two hours and 28 minutes and more than a half a minute faster than the runner-up. The 34-year-old Dunphy claimed this country's first ever medal in the sport at the 2021 Olympics, also in Tokyo.
Starting point is 00:04:19 A legal delay to the call of about 400 ostriches at a farm in British Columbia has been denied. Yesterday, the federal government of appeal blocked an application for a stay to the slaughter. The farm was hit by an outbreak of the avion flu that killed 69 ostriches last December, leading to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to order the call. It says there are ongoing risks posed by the flock in that conditions that they are kept in, while the farmers argue the birds are healthy and have acquired herd immunity.
