I'm Kate McGilfrey. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of the British Capitol today for the Unite the Kingdom Rally. The anti-immigration march was organized by a far-right activist. Dominic Volitis reports.
Starting point is 00:00:45 British police say at least 110,000 people attended today's Unite the Kingdom Rally in central London. Demonstrators carried banners reading, take back our company. and protect our borders, while chanting slogans about migration and national identity. Clashes broke out between police and protesters during the event. The authorities say some officers were attacked with projectiles thrown from the crowds. At times, the police had to intervene to keep demonstrators away from a smaller anti-racism counter-protest. The event, which was organised by the far-right activist, Tommy Robinson was billed as a celebration of free speech and a chance to mourn Charlie Kirk.
Starting point is 00:01:37 The American conservative activists shot dead in Utah on Wednesday. Dominic Volaitis for CBC News, Bristol, England. In Phoenix, Arizona, the widow of Charlie Kirk is speaking publicly for the first time since his fatal shooting. The evildoers responsible for my husband's assassination have no idea what they have done. Kirk paid tribute to the first responders, the U.S. President and vice president as well as her husband. The conservative activist was considered one of the most influential right-wing voices appealing to young Americans. He was an ardent supporter of Donald Trump and his mega agenda, and his wife is vowing to continue that work. You have no idea the fire that you have
Starting point is 00:02:21 ignited within this wife. The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry. To everyone listening tonight across America, the movement my husband built will not die. Kirk says her husband's organization will continue tours of university campuses through the fall and into the years to come. A University of Toronto professor has been placed on leave after posting a comment about Kirk's killing. Screenshots of Ruth Marshall's ex-account show a post on Wednesday, which says, quote, shooting is honestly too good for so many of you fascist expletives. The University of Toronto says it took immediate action after learning about this post. The CBC reached out to Marshall, but hasn't heard back.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Quebec's family doctors are taking the province to court. The Federation of General Practitioners accuses the Legault government of negotiating in bad faith by introducing a bill that would allow the health minister to unilaterally set compensation and working conditions for GPs. There is no formal dispute resolution mechanism for doctors, and they are not allowed to strike. If there's no agreement within 90 days, the union wants any remaining issues to be sent to binding arbitration. And the debate about speed cameras has risen again in Ontario with Premier Doug Ford saying that cities should ditch them.
Starting point is 00:03:41 But a recent study found drivers do slow down in areas with the automated speed cameras. Tyler Cheese has more. Get rid of the speed cameras or I'm going to do it for him. That's Premier Doug Ford expressing his dislike of automated speed cameras on Tuesday morning after 16 Toronto cameras were found vandalized. This is nothing but a tax grab. But advocates for the cameras say they have made a difference. Robin Jones is the president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
Starting point is 00:04:08 In July of this year, a study was done by sick kids and TMU across 250 urban school zones and demonstrated that the cameras reduced speeding vehicles by 45%. As for criticism that the cameras are just a cash grab, Jones says that money goes back to public services. They go into fixing road safety and road and transportation routes. So much-needed infrastructure money that municipalities are constantly asking for. She says she'd like to sit down to discuss the issue further with the Premier. Tyler Cheese, CBC News, Toronto.
