A United Nations Commission says Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, The report was released today in Geneva by the panel's chair Navi Pillay. The commission concluded that Israel has committed genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza and that it is continuing with that genocide.
Starting point is 00:00:48 The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva rejects the findings as a libelous rant. Israel says it's acting in self-defense after the Palestinian militant group Hamas invaded Israel, nearly two years ago, killing civilians and taking hostages. This morning Israel announced it has started the main part of a ground operation to take control of Gaza City, the last stronghold of Hamas. Stats Canada's August inflation numbers will be published this morning, marking the final piece of economic data before the Bank of Canada's interest rate decision on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Jenna Benchitret has more. We're actually not expecting too much drama in this report. Most economists agree. inflation likely ticked up in August, but it'll probably stay below the Bank of Canada's 2% target. That's what economist Douglas Porter thinks. Our official call is for the rate to go to 1.8%. It's still a pretty low number. Cheaper gas prices have helped keep inflation low since the consumer carbon tax was removed in April.
Starting point is 00:01:50 But gas and energy prices are volatile, and they can fog up the data. When they're excluded, core inflation is higher than 2%. And that's what the Bank of Canada will be watching for. If numbers show that inflation crept up, that probably won't be enough to derail an expected interest rate cut. Still, Porter isn't completely ruling out a surprise. It is possible that we get a real clunker of a report that's quite a bit higher than expected.
Starting point is 00:02:17 The central bank makes its next decision tomorrow. Jenna Benchit, CBC News, Toronto. While politicians are off to the races in Newfoundland and Labrador, It's the first full day of the provincial election campaign. Heather Gillis reports. All three major parties in Newfoundland and Labrador kicked off their provincial election campaigns last night. Over the next 28 days, the Liberals, PCs and NDP will crisscross the province making promises to voters. Liberal leader John Hogan's main priority, the Churchill Falls in Gull Island Hydro Deal with Quebec,
Starting point is 00:02:51 which, if finalized, could mean 225 billion in revenue. This historic deal will mean funding for health care so families can get the care when they need it. It will mean more money in your pockets. Progressive conservative leader Tony Wakeham says he'll have a full independent review of that deal and hold a referendum on it. On my watch is Premier, I will not rubber stamp a bad deal that sends the benefits of our resources to Quebec for another 50 years. Voters will decide which party forms. the next provincial government on October 14th. Heather Gillis, CBC News, St. John's.
Starting point is 00:03:31 A small plane crashed in the middle of Toronto's East End last night. Three people were on board the aircraft, all of them walked away uninjured. David Sidney Corillia witnessed the crash. We saw a plane really low, I'm going to say maybe 250 to 300 feet in the air, very quiet, and it was just kind of going from the west side of the field to the east side of the field. and then it was out of sight and then we heard a crash and then we worked our way over here.
Starting point is 00:04:01 We saw three occupants that were near the plane. And finally, the famous Coachella Music Festival in California has just announced its lineup for next year and a Canadian superstar is the big headliner. That's Justin Bieber singing his new song Yukon. Bieber has made guest appearances before at Coachella, but next April, he'll perform as the main Saturday night act. And that is your world this hour.
