State of Utah versus Tyler James Robinson.
Could you state your name?
Tyler James Robinson.
The man accused of killing right-wing activist Charlie Kirk has made his first court appearance.
On a video link without a lawyer, Tyler Robinson said only his name.
Prosecutors in Utah laid out his charges earlier today,
and the state says it will seek the death penalty for the 22-year-old.
Karina Roman has more from Washington.
Tyler Robinson faces seven charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm,
obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and a violent offense committed in the presence of a child.
Utah County DA Jeff Gray says the state will be seeking the death penalty.
Charlie Kirk was murdered while engaging in one of our most sacred and cherished American rights,
the bedrock of our Democratic Republic, the free exchange of ideas.
Gray says DNA on the trigger of the gun matches Robinson's,
and he read out a lengthy text exchange between Robinson and his roommate,
in which he confessed to murdering Charlie Kirk.
Robinson, why did I do it?
Roommate, yeah, Robinson, I had enough of his hatred.
Some hate can't be negotiated out.
The county DA acknowledged none of this has been tested in court,
and he said that Robinson deserves a fair trial.
