Starting point is 00:00:25 Please play responsibly. Charitable gaming, community good. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. Canada's inflation rate rose 1.9% last month. Lower gas prices helped ease some of the pressure, but it only tells part of the story. Even as inflation remains in the Bank of Canada's target range, food prices remain stubbornly high, and food banks are struggling to keep up. Colin Butler reports. One in four Canadian households can't put enough food on the table, 25.5 percent, according to Food Bank Canada's latest report. We need to feed more than one in ten Trontonians.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Neil Hetherington is CEO of the Toronto Daily Food Bank. He says governments need to raise disability benefits because people can't afford food. Somebody who is on disability incomes is living in deep poverty, and they're having to come to the Daily Bread Food Bank. And it's not just a short-term problem. Food insecurity has been rising across the country for years. Incomes have simply not cut face. Professor Valerie Tarasuck studies food insecurity at the University of Toronto. I think we have a fundamental problem of income that needs to be addressed,
Starting point is 00:01:40 and building more housing isn't going to address that income issue. Across Ontario, food bank use has doubled in the last five years. The problem is widespread, and it's only getting worse. Colin Butler, CBC News, London, Ontario. Christopher Freeland is stepping down as Canada's Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, and she says she won't run in the next federal election. Freeland will remain a member of Parliament and become Canada's special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine. As for her ministerial role, it's being split up. Canada U.S. Trade Minister Dominic
Starting point is 00:02:14 LeBlanc will absorb Freeland's internal trade duties, and government House Leader Stephen McKinnon will take on transport. State of Utah versus Tyler James Robinson. Could you state your name? Tyler James Robinson. The man accused of killing Charlie Kirk made his first court appearance Tuesday. On video link, without a lawyer, Tyler Robinson only said his name. Katie Simpson has more. The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy. The Utah County attorney, Jeff Gray, stood in front of reporters outlining the case against the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk,
Starting point is 00:02:51 confirming that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson is facing seven charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Following the press conference, I am filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. Gray read from a series of text messages he says were between Robinson and his roommate, who had become his romantic partner and is undergoing a male-to-female gender transition. Kirk was advocating for conservative viewpoints opposed to transgender rights. Robinson's mother told police her son had become more political over the past year, adopting more pro-2S-LGBQ-plus positions as he started dating his partner.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Authorities also say Robinson's DNA was found on the trigger of the murder weapon. Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington. Hollywood legend Robert Redford has died at the age of 89. Some of his films included The Sting, The Way We Were, and All the President's Men. Ali Shiazor reports on the life of Robert Redford. Starting point is 00:03:53 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, one of many legendary titles Robert Redford was a part of during his six-decade-long career. Redford has died. His publicist confirming quote, he passed away at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. Redford's official biographer, Michael Feeney Callan, says he was more than just a leading man. He was very focused on the issue of time and life and the opportunity he had. in the talents he had to do something positive, contribute something positive. Part of his legacy is climate activism and starting the Sundance Film Festival. Some of the greats he starred alongside are paying tribute.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Merrill Streep's statement reads, One of the Lions has passed. Rest in peace, my lovely friend. And Jane Fonda says he stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.
