As U.S. Democrats prepare new legislation aimed at protecting free speech, that's after Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show was abruptly pulled off the air, following his comments on slaying conservative activist Charlie Kirk and on Trump's reaction to it. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is accusing the Trump administration of systematically silencing its critics. This is an assault on everything this country has stood for since the Constitution's been signed.
Starting point is 00:01:08 They don't want people to even speak when they don't like what they say. That is the road to autocracy. The Democrats bill entitled the No Political Enemies Act outlines a series of legal protections for people targeted for a political speech, though it's unlikely to successfully become law. In France, union members and other workers went on. strike for the day and students marched out of their high schools. They want more spending on public services and higher taxes on the wealthy. They're also demanding a reversal of a change that requires people to work longer before getting a pension. Mary-Lise Lyon is the Secretary-General of France's
Starting point is 00:01:43 largest union. It's important for us to be all together. All trade unions are in this manifestation and we have just a message to the government. It's no austerity. And we would like Fiscality and justice, it's very important for the workers. The goal is to turn up the heat on new Prime Minister Sebastian Le Corno and President Mano Macron. The politicians are in a battle both in Parliament and on the streets about how to fix France's struggles with high debt. Alberta has charged five people after an extensive investigation into poaching and illegal trafficking. Among them is an American fugitive. They face multiple charges related to
Starting point is 00:02:27 killing eagles on First Nations land in the province. Anne-Marie Tricky reports. Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services has charged five individuals with a combined 34 charges under the Alberta Wildlife Act and nine charges under the Criminal Code, including hunting wildlife for which there is no open season and unlawful possession and trafficking of wildlife. The investigations resulted in some of the accused
Starting point is 00:02:50 selling bald eagle feather headdress and black bear claw necklaces to undercover officers. Search warrants also on covered multiple freshly removed eagle feet with talons and feathers. The Alberta government classifies bald eagles as a sensitive species, and according to Colin Weir of the Alberta Birds of Prey Nature Center, they must be protected. Fish and wildlife are to be commended for keeping an eye on poaching incidents, like what just happened. In a statement, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, Mike Ellis,
Starting point is 00:03:19 said that poaching is a crime that robs Alberta of its wildlife. Anne-Marie Tricky, CBC News, Calgary. Toronto Blue Jays fans would not have predicted this in the spring. But now, as Major League Baseball's regular season winds down, playoff hype is ramping up. There's a buzz that Canada's only team could be on the path to the World Series. Thomas Dagla has the story.
