It is a fact at this point. Toronto audiences just know what's up.
We often predict which new movies will end up becoming mega hits.
We built the buzz for movies like The Princess Bride and Slumdung Millionaire.
Both of those movies were initially underestimated.
And we know that the TIF People's Choice Award is a great predictor for the Oscars.
So this year, you know that you should be betting on Hamnet from director Chloe Zhao.
So even if you miss the Toronto International Film Festival this year,
you can catch it with commotion and me, Alameen, Abdu Mahmoud, on our special series, TIF and 12.
Find commotion wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, the world this hour.
I'm Dave Seglins.
Estonia is calling on NATO allies for help
after it says Russian jets invaded the country's airspace.
Officials say three Russian fighter jets
entered its airspace in what they call a brazen incursion.
Estonia also summoned a Russian diplomat to protest the incident.
The airspace violation comes just over a week
after NATO planes down several Russian drones over Poland.
A prominent Republican is lashing out at the head of the U.S. communications regulator
over threats made against broadcasters.
FCC chair, Brendan Carr, threatened to impose fines or pull licenses for broadcasters
that aired Jimmy Kimmel Live.
It came in the wake of Kimmel's comments about the assassination of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.
Well, Republican Senator Ted Cruz told podcast listeners today,
that he's no fan of Jimmy Kimmel
but denounce threats of censorship.
I think it is unbelievably dangerous
for government to put itself in the position of saying
we're going to decide what speech we like and what we don't
and we're going to threaten to take you off air
if we don't like what you're saying.
And it might feel good right now to threaten Jimmy Kimmel.
But when it is used to silence every conservative in America,
we will regret it.
ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel live indefinitely.
That decision comes as President Donald Trump
continues to pressure broadcasters
to stop airing content
that he finds objectionable.
Here at home, the federal government is proposing a new law
aimed at making it easier to prosecute hate crimes.
It would criminalize the obstruction of places of worship
and intimidation of those who attend.
The display of hate symbols in public
would also become a criminal offense.
Justice Minister Sean Fraser says
the increase in hate-related incidents
goes contrary to Canadian values.
We cannot ignore hate in our communities
and expect that it will not fester.
If we do not take action, we will be responsible for the hate that will continue to impact communities across this country.
Statistics Canada says the number of hate crimes reported to police last year is nearly double the amount reported in 2020.
Canadian-made COVID-19 shots will be available in this country beginning this fall.
The moderna mRNA vaccines are being produced at the company's biomanufacturing facility in Laval, Quebec.
industry minister Melanie Jolie says this is part of Canada's effort to set up a domestic vaccine supply chain.
Canada's ready. We're ready to produce here at home. We're ready to protect our people and we're ready to lead on the global stage.
The LaValle facility will have capacity to produce about 100 million doses a year.
A new report is shedding light on how many patients walk into an emergency room and then walk out before getting to see a doctor.
The worst rate, Prince Edward Island.
She and Desjardin reports.
We're equally concerned.
A new report from the Montreal Economic Institute
suggests about 14% of people who go to emergency rooms on PEI
leave without getting treatment.
It's almost twice the national average
and worse than any other province.
Dr. Ken Farian is PEI's medical director
for hospital services and patient flow.
He says, well, most leave with minor problems.
Unfortunately, we do see.
some patients who have more serious concerns, who choose to leave without being seen.
The report shows more than a million people across Canada left untreated last year.
On PEI, Farian says staffing shortages are a factor.
Thousands are looking for a family doctor and turn to the ER when they feel it's their only option.
He says progress is being made.
It just takes time.
A catch-22 for those tired of waiting.
She and Desjardin, CBC News, Shilatown.
Canada's women's rugby team has clinched a spot in the women's rugby World Cup final.
They beat defending champs New Zealand today, 3419.
Canada will play the winner of England and France, who face off on Saturday.
The final, set for September 27th, will mark the first appearance for Canada at a World Cup final since 2014.
And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Dave Seglance.
Thank you.
