Charitable gaming, community good. from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude fagg we begin in ukraine where officials say at least three people were killed during a large-scale russian missile strike in denipro several more people are said to have been wounded ukraine's president blotemir zalenski is calling the attack a deliberate strategy to terrorize civilians and destroy infrastructure Russia is also being accused of violating Estonia's airspace. Romania is also accusing Moscow of breaching its airspace.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Several European airports, including the biggest on the continent, have been hit by a cyber attack. The attack has disrupted electronic check-in and boarding systems for passengers at London's Heathrow Airport, as well as Brussels and Berlin. The system provider says departing passengers can still check in manually and that it's working on getting the issue fixed as soon as possible. Canada is expected to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
Starting point is 00:01:38 The man who will soon be Canada's UN ambassador spoke to CBC Radio's The House about why that move is coming now and where the Canadian government stands on accusations that Israel is committing genocide. Host of the House, Catherine Cullen, reports. We've seen horrific things happen, both in terms of what Hamas is. done and what has been done in Gaza. David Lamedi says that is what's spurring Canada to recognize a Palestinian state. A former Justice Minister, now advisor to Mark Carney, in November, he'll become Canada's
Starting point is 00:02:10 ambassador to the United Nations. The goal is that we have a Jewish state, Israel. We have a Palestinian state that live side by side, insecurity, and peaceful coexistence in which Hamas does not have a role. Conservative leader Pierre Palliev has called this a plan for a hundred, Hamas state. Earlier this month, he said his party would never support it. We were obviously not going to recognize Hamas as a state. Well, the NDP wants the Canadian government to do more, including calling Israel's actions
Starting point is 00:02:41 a genocide. This week, a United Nations commissioned panel of inquiry said Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has repeatedly vehemently denied the accusation. Catherine Cullen, CBC News, Ottawa. The federal government is topping up $1.5 billion to the Affordable Housing Fund. This comes after the launch of Build Canada Homes, the federal government's new agency that will oversee housing programs. Here's the housing minister, Gregor, Robertson. Projects that are currently in the pipeline with CMHC that can be funded in the near term. We want to make sure that we're not skipping a beat here as Build Canada Homes gets established.
Starting point is 00:03:21 We want to make sure there is adequate funding to fund projects that are already well along. in the process. Robertson says, in additional $385 million will be added to the rapid housing stream. Canada is among the growing number of countries grappling with how to regulate the use of artificial intelligence. In the meantime, the company behind CHAT GPT is introducing changes to protect kids who use it. Nicole Williams reports. What began as a homework helper gradually turned itself into a confidant and then a suicide coach. You don't want to die because you're weak. You want to die because you're tired of being strong. Parent company OpenAI is now introducing a system. It says would identify you. users younger than 18 and limit what it shows them. OpenAI says it would also contact a child's
Starting point is 00:04:30 parents, even the authorities, if it feels the risk of self-harm is imminent. On its website, OpenAI says it knows some of these changes compromised privacy for adults, but believe it's a worthy trade-off for child safety. Nicole Williams, CBC News, Toronto.
