Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude fagg the canadian government now officially recognizes the state of palestine it's a major shift in foreign policy and part of a coordinated effort being made today together with several other countries in a statement prime minister mark carney says the actions of both israel and hamas have steadily and gravely eroded the possibility of achieving Palestinian statehood through a negotiated settlement. He cites the Hamas attacks on October the 7th, as well as Israeli settler expansions in the West Bank and Israel's assault on Gaza. Karni says, quote, the current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established. The Canadian support to
Starting point is 00:01:20 recognize a Palestinian state comes with a hope of peace as a two-state solution. In a statement, Carney also said that Canada's declaration for a Palestinian state in no way legitimizes terrorism, nor is it any reward for it. Nor does it compromise Canada's steadfast support for the state of Israel, its people, and their security. Bob Ray, the Canadian ambassador to the UN, echoed those sentiments when he joined Rosemary Barton Live. We are going to continue to dialogue, of course,
Starting point is 00:01:52 with our American friends and with the Israelis, about the path forward. This is not intended in any way, shape, or form to change Canada's support for the existence and the security of the state of Israel. Israeli officials say Hamas is being rewarded for its October 7th attacks. The UK and Australia have also announced their formal recognition of the state of Palestine. It comes ahead of a United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York this week. Kier Starrmer is Britain's Prime Minister.
Starting point is 00:02:23 We are acting to keep alive the possibility of people. peace and a two-state solution. That means a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state. At the moment, we have neither. In New Hampshire, we heard what sounded like several balloons being popped. We all began running in different directions. One man describes the scene after a gunman opened fire during a wedding at a country club in Nashua. At least one person was killed and several others were wounded. Investigators say the shooting took place as the bride and groom took to the dance floor. A male suspect is in custody charged with second degree murder. Police, though, say the motive is still unclear. Well, it's a sign of the change from summer to fall, heading out to pick up
Starting point is 00:03:13 a pumpkin ahead of Halloween. But this season, some Canadians should be ready to find a local crop not quite as healthy as or as orange as they may expect. Sarah Levitt has more. Here is just a really immature pumpkin. At Black Fox Farm and distillery in Saskatoon, Barb's definition Cote moves vines aside to show her pumpkin crop in the field. The ones that are orange are smaller than normal. The uncooperative weather means the highlight event of the year for the farm is cancelled. It's pumpkin festival.
Starting point is 00:03:45 We had a lot of cool, wet, rainy weather, and pumpkins like hot and dry. But for some farmers in other places in Canada, it was actually too hot and too dry. According to the Canadian drought monitor, around 70% of the country's farmland has been abnormally dry this summer. We're thinking we could be down as much as 40%.
