Starting point is 00:00:25 Please play responsibly. Charitable gaming, community good. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. Canada now officially recognizes a Palestinian state. Until now, Canada's policy was to wait for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, but the Kearney government decided to stop waiting. Sasha Petrissik traveled to Ramallah in the occupied West Bank for Palestinian reaction.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Many Palestinians feel they, heard these sentiments before, without the formal recognition, of course. But for others, this brings a little light into two very dark years. And this is what they had to say to me today. Oh, for sure, it does make a different, because we need to have two-state solutions. Other than saying words, I think there should be actual actions. Now, these people are in the occupied West Bank, where there has been a lot of violence. Still, though, it's nothing like what Palestinians in Gaza have endured. We asked them what they thought of this recognition by Western countries as well.
Starting point is 00:01:36 They recognize Palestine and they still send weapons to Israel, says one man called Salon Nasser. In the government halls of the Palestinian Authority, there is more optimism. But I have to tell you, if there's one thing people are happy about, it's that they feel seen. Sasha Petrosake, CBC News, Jerusalem. Pierre Polyev says Prime Minister Carney is recognizing the Hamas state in another effort to distract from his record of rampant crime, debt, immigration, and job loss. Deputy Conservative leader, Melissa Lansman, goes even further. Because of this decision by this Prime Minister and this government, our world is more unsafe. Our country is less respected by our allies.
Starting point is 00:02:24 And once again, a small but vocal minority here at home notches another win. on behalf of the terrorists and the Jew haters. Lansman says the Palestinian militant group Hamas is still holding Israeli hostages in Gaza, and the recognition of a Palestinian state vindicates Hamas' violence. In the U.S., massive crowds gathered under intense security in Arizona for the Memorial of Charlie Kirk. U.S. President Donald Trump was among those paying tribute to the conservative activists, and he thanked Canadian supporters of Charlie Kirk. In Calgary, Canada thousands gathered.
Starting point is 00:03:00 at City Hall to sing the American National Anthem and raise up posters with the name Charlie Kirk. Kirk was shot and killed while speaking on a university campus on September 10th, the CBC's Katie Simpson reports from Arizona, where the memorial was held. Please give a warm welcome to Mrs. Erica Kirk. Of all those watching, Kirk's widow, Erica, had a message for one, speaking directly to the man accused of killing her husband earlier this month. That man, that young man, I forgive him.
Starting point is 00:03:37 At times it felt like a memorial but also a political rally. Attended by the president and most of his cabinet, Donald Trump praised Kirk but will not adopt his approach to politics. He did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them. That's where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent. Kirk was a polarizing figure, beloved by conservatives. He also drew condemnation from critics who disagreed with some of his far-right views and the inflammatory language he sometimes used to make his points.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Katie Simpson, CBC News, Glendale, Arizona. Hundreds of health care workers are being vaccinated against Ebola as the Democratic Republic of Congo battles a new outbreak of the deadly virus. The World Health Organization says dozens of confirmed deaths have been recorded in recent weeks, many of them, health care workers. Groundballed a second. And the Blue Jays are going to the postseason. The Toronto Blue Jays beat Kansas City this afternoon 8-5,
Starting point is 00:04:39 the first American League team to clinch a playoff spot. Toronto missed the playoffs last year, but currently holds the best record in the AL with 90 wins. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Hurland. Thank you.
