The United Nations is hosting a summit today in New York to try to revive the idea of a two-state solution consisting of an Israeli and Palestinian nation living side by side in peace. Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend just one day after he announced Canada would recognize a Palestinian state. Evan Dyer reports. Well, Prime Minister Carney won't actually be addressing the UN General Assembly this year. He's going to leave that task to Foreign Minister Anita Anand later this week. For him, though, a much more important event will occur on Monday afternoon, and that is

the conference for the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of the two-state solution. And that meeting is going to bring together the leaders of countries that already recognize Palestine with countries such as Britain and Canada that recognized it over the weekend and others such as France who are expected to recognize it during this General Assembly, perhaps possibly even announcing those recognitions during that meeting on Monday afternoon. Now, this is actually the second wave of recognitions that took place during the Gaza War. Last spring, we saw Ireland, Norway and Spain all recognized Palestine together on the same day. The Trump administration, of course, remains doggedly opposed to recognition, so much so that they've refused to issue visas to the Palestinian delegation.

Charlie Kirk's widow says she forgives the man accused of killing her husband, making the announcement in front of tens of thousands of people, attending the memorial service to honor her late husband. It was a message not shared by U.S. President Donald Trump, who used the service to attack his political opponents. The CBC's Katie Simpson was at the memorial in Glendale, Arizona. As Erica Kirk walked out onto the stage in front of tens of thousands of people at her husband's memorial,

she paused to wipe tears from her eyes before speaking directly to the man accused of killing her husband. That young man, I forgive him. Charlie Kirk was remembered by family, friends, and political allies as a leader within the MAGA movement. A polarizing figure, he often drew condemnation from his critics who disagreed, with his positions and some of the inflammatory language he used. And the violence comes largely from the left. Trump laughed about some of the political differences he had with Kirk. That's where I disagreed with Charlie.

Alberta Premier Daniel Smith is pushing back against allegations her government will use the not-withstanding clause for legislation that impacts transgender people. A leaked memo suggests the government plans to integrate the clause into three laws. Stephanie Kramm has more.

It's a leaked memo, so obviously it's an internal discussion document, and somebody's upset about it, and so they're trying to make a media story out of it. Premier Daniel Smith on her weekly call-in radio show, pushing back against allegations her government plans to use the not-withstanding clause to override certain sections of the charter. That leaked memo says the province will preemptively integrate the clause into three laws impacting transgender people,

including one limiting gender-affirming health care like the use of puberty blockers. Parent Eldika Simpson is disappointed by the government, saying the targeted legislation banning transgender women from female sports will impact her child Riley. I can't imagine being a child or a youth who wakes up, hearing that their government are prepared to say that your rights are not protected.

If Alberta decides to use the notwithstanding clause, it'll be introduced to Cabinet on October 21st. And Premier Smith says she welcomes taking the issue to court.
