Starting point is 00:00:00 Too many students are packed into overcrowded classrooms in Ontario schools, and it's hurting their ability to learn. But instead of helping our kids, the Ford government is playing politics, taking over school boards and silencing local voices. It shouldn't be this way. Tell the Ford government to get serious about tackling overcrowded classrooms because smaller classes would make a big difference for our kids.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Go to Building Better Schools.ca. A message from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario. from cbc news the world is sour i'm neil kumar jimmy kimmel's late-night talk show is now back on the air if you're just joining us we are preempting your regularly scheduled encore episode of celebrity family feud to bring you this special report i'm happy to be here tonight with you next star in sinclair say they will continue to preempt the program citing what they call insensitive comments relating to the killing of right white-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Meantime, Trump is now threatening to take legal action against ABC. More than 200 politicians across Ontario now have access to strong mayor powers. Some are using those abilities a lot more than others. The CBC's Jason Veal looks at the data and continued calls to get those powers removed.
Starting point is 00:01:18 I'm so totally against the legislation. Windsor City Councilor Fred Francis called it a sad day for democracy when Windsor's mayor used a veto to override a majority decision of counsel earlier this year. Those powers also give most Ontario mayors the ability to hire and fire high-level municipal staff. The province says the powers aim to tackle issues like housing and infrastructure more efficiently. Windsor and Toronto's mayors use their powers the most out of all big city mayors, a total of 82 times. A new study released this month anonymously interviewed 32 top administrators who overwhelmingly were frustrated or angry about mayoral powers. Stacey Hushin is with Strategy Corp and she helped conduct the survey. This is where you see that shift from CAAs as objective civil servants to serving in more of a political role.
Starting point is 00:02:04 In a statement, a spokesperson with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing says mayors know their communities best and municipalities are expected to follow the strong mayor legislation. Jason VO, CBC News, Windsor. In BC, tensions are high at an ostrich farm in East Cootney, as police arrested two farmers for resisting a coal order by government officials that will kill off 400 birds. Brady Strachan has more. Katie, if you guys come out, we can talk about that. Emotions run high as ostrich farmers negotiate with the RCMP.
Starting point is 00:02:35 The birds are going to be okay. They're not. The other option is, my compatriots here have to come in and arrest you. Then you will be taken to our detachment. Two people were arrested. The RCMP didn't confirm who, but the arrest was in an ostrich enclosure where two owners had been staying overnight. Police are on the farm to allow the Canadian food inspection agency to carry out a call of nearly 400 birds.
Starting point is 00:03:02 As stamping out policy, the agency says, is the only way to deal with the case of avian flu. In a live stream video, farm spokesperson Katie Pasitney says they are expecting the worst. They're going to make corrals of hay bales to dart and kill our animals. The farm is asking for time as they take their case to the Supreme Court of Canada. Brady Stracken, CBC News, Colonna. Those are seats. These are seats. Even moon rocks, real moon rocks. And yes, the four astronauts who'll make the trip around the moon and back, the first such trip for humans in more than 50 years.
