Charitable gaming, community good. from cbc news the world this hour i'm kate mcgilfrey the fbi says it believes immigration enforcement officers were the target of a shooting in texas today a gunman killed one person and injured two others outside of an ice facility in dallas willie lowry has the latest the fbi is calling it targeted violence police say the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound bullets found near the suspect's body reveal a possible motive. Joe Rothrock is the FBI's special agent in charge of the Dallas field
Starting point is 00:01:05 office. Early evidence that we've seen from rounds that were found near the suspected shooter contain messages that are anti-ice in nature. Rothrock says it's not the first time ICE has been targeted. Trump administration officials have deplored the use of violence against agents in recent months. Republican Senator Ted Cruz called for an end to all violence. This state to stop. Violence is wrong. Politically motivated violence is wrong. Law enforcement officers did not disclose the identity of the victims, though they made clear that no officers were injured.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. The Ukrainian president is trying to rally the world leaders gathered this week at the United Nations. Vladimir Zelensky told the UN General Assembly the global response to Russia's aggression is not enough. This is all about collapse of international. law and the weakness of the international institutions. And so it's about the rise of weapons. Weapons decide who survives.
Starting point is 00:02:11 Selensky says international law is meaningless unless powerful countries are willing to defend it. He also says modern warfare is in a new era, thanks to rapid advances in both drone and AI technology. The Supreme Court of Canada has granted a stay in the destruction of a flock of ostriches in Southeast BC. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency moved in on Universal Ostrich Farms on Monday to prepare for the call of some 400 birds. The agency ordered the destruction after avian flu was detected in this herd last December. The owners of universal ostrich farms have been fighting that order ever since. Their supporters argue this is an example of government overreach. Typhoon Ragasa is battering mainland China after claiming at least 17 lives in Taiwan.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Millions of people have in order to leave their homes as the storm delivers extreme winds and heavy rains. Philippe LeBlanc has the latest from Taipei. The scale of destruction in eastern Taiwan has been far worse than anticipated, officials said, after a barrier lake bursts its bank in Hualien County. Some geologists described the breach as a tsunami from the mountains. The water level rose so fast that we saw. spend the night on the second floor of our house, hoping to be rescued, says this woman, who was taken to a city shelter. The super typhoon has now been downgraded to a severe typhoon
Starting point is 00:03:41 and his pummeling southern China where close to 2 million people were evacuated in Guangdong. Hong Kong has also been at a standstill since yesterday. More than 60 people were injured by strong winds and high waves that crashed on the island. The Southeast Asian nations of Vietnam and Laos are expected to be in the path of the severe typhoon tomorrow. Philippe LeBlanc, CBC News, Taipei. Four astronauts bound for the moon met with the press today. NASA says it's planning its 10-day Artemis II mission for next year. It's been 50 years since any country has made the trip to the moon.
Starting point is 00:04:16 And on this trip, one of the crew members for the first time ever is Canadian Jeremy Hanson. A day like this, it puts things in a perspective for you. And I took a moment to kind of step back and think about, wow, what an extraordinary privilege it is to train with my fellow crewmates here to go on this mission. The mission could commence as soon as February 26. The Artemis 2 crew will circle the moon and get a view of its far side, flying further into space than anyone has before.
