At a crucial moment for Palestinian statehood, the president of the Palestinian Authority will address the UN General Assembly later this morning. But Magmoud Abbas will do so via video link, against the Trump administration is refusing to allow him to enter the U.S. Sasha Petritschik reports
Starting point is 00:01:02 At the UN, one world leader after another endorses Palestinian statehood and pushes for an immediate end to the Gaza war. But the Israeli leader fighting it rejects all of that. Condemming support for a Palestinian state, Benjamin Netanyahu vows this will not happen. He's on his way to New York, to speak tomorrow, and to consult with U.S. President Donald Trump on how Israel should respond.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Jewish settlers want him to annex all of the occupied West Bank immediately in defiance of international law. On a big screen at the UN, Abbas applauded countries supporting a Palestinian state, including Canada, earlier this week. He's already been banned from the U.S. by a president who opposes recognition. Sasha Petrissick, CBC News, Jerusalem. After two days this week at the UN in New York, Prime Minister Mark Carney leaves today for London. Carney will be meeting with British Prime Minister Kier Starrmer and other European leaders,
Starting point is 00:02:13 as well as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Carney's office says the meetings will deal with foreign investment and other initiatives that follow the ongoing Trump tariff campaign. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy. Sarkozy and his wife entering a Paris courthouse earlier today. The court has found that leading up to a successful 2007 presidential bid, Sarkozy illegally accepted millions of euros in financing
Starting point is 00:02:48 from the late Libyan dictator Moumar Gaddafi. Sarkozy, who served five years as French president, has always denied any wrongdoing. and says he will appeal. We're expecting the federal government to roll out its plans today for the future of Canada Post. Public Works Minister Joel Lightbound is releasing a series of measures to address the financial challenges currently facing the Crown Corporation. As for the union representing Canada Post workers,
Starting point is 00:03:16 it says it has not been briefed on today's announcement. Cup W is in a labor dispute with Canada Post. Last month, the union's 55,000 members voted down what Canada Post says was its final contract. offer. A study published in the Lancet Medical Journal is warning that over the next 25 years, cancer cases and cancer deaths around the world will increase dramatically. And as Jennifer Youen reports, researchers and doctors are saying the health care systems around the world need to start preparing. I think we're already feeling a bit of strain. Cancer specialist Dr. Keith Stewart
Starting point is 00:03:49 has started to wonder, do we have enough chairs for people to come in to receive their chemotherapy, beds for those receiving treatments like car T cell therapy. That strain may be getting worse in coming years. According to a new study published in the Lancet Medical Journal by 2050, cancer rates and deaths are expected to balloon by the millions around the world. And while Canada is doing well compared to other countries, an Asian population will mean more people getting diagnosed with cancer and more people dying with cancer across Canada. Stewart, the director of Toronto's Princess Margaret Cancer Program, says authorities should start preparing now. I mean, we need to do better with our efficiency, getting people out of the hostel and doing that efficiently.
