I'm Kate McGilfrey. Minister of Government Transformation, Joelle Lightbound, says Canada Post is losing about $10 million a day right now. But he says that a series of reforms will go some way towards saving the Crown Corporation.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Lightbound says Canada Post will be allowed to end home delivery and convert millions of addresses to community mailboxes. And a moratorium on closing rural post offices will be lifted. Lifting this moratorium will allow Canada Post to right-size its network to adapt to today's demographics. But I want to be clear, Canada Post has an obligation to serve all Canadians in every community in Canada, and that will not change. Canada Post will also be allowed to move more mail by ground rather than air,
Starting point is 00:01:16 adding days to delivery time. Lightbound is urging the Canadian Union of Postal workers to be flexible as contract negotiations drag on. I hope that in light of today's announcement, Both management and the union can return to the table with a renewed relationship and work toward a viable future. Lightbound says the reforms will save about half a billion dollars a year. A Quebec woman has pleaded guilty to throwing boiling water on a 10-year-old boy.
Starting point is 00:01:43 47-year-old Stefani Borrell will be sentenced next year for aggravated assault. Last October, the child approached Borrell's home in Longuey with the aim of ringing her doorbell and running away. Borrell says she had been the subject of this prank, for months. She opened the door and threw out boiling water, causing second-degree burns on this child's face and shoulders. The boy is black, and an agreed statement of facts says no evidence suggested Borrell targeted him because of his race. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says his government is going to ban speed cameras across the province. Because enough is enough. In a few
Starting point is 00:02:21 weeks, our government will introduce legislation to ban speed cameras in Ontario to protect taxpayers, and drivers and stop them from being gouged. The ban comes in spite of a plea from the Association of Ontario Municipalities to Keep the cameras. A recent study by the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto Metropolitan University also found that cameras reduce speeding by 45%. Ford says that instead of cameras, the province will give money for other traffic calming measures, like speed bumps, roundabouts, and better signs. The president of the Palestinian Authority is pledging to work on a peace plan, led by other countries, including the U.S.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Mahmoud Abbas addressed the U.N. one day before his Israeli counterpart is set to speak. Sasha Petrasek reports. Blocked from coming in person by the U.S., Palestinian Authority President Mahmur Abbas appeared through a video link, and he had the ear of many who've just recognized a Palestinian state. October 7th, he said, does not represent the Palestinian people. But he also condemned Israel's attacks in Gaza as a war crime. Abbas said he'd work with the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and France on a peace plan for the Strip.

He suggested a post-war Gaza with a government organized by his administration in the short term and no role for Hamas. He also said Palestinians refuse to be held hostage. by the whims of the Israeli government. Sasha Petrissik, CBC News, Jerusalem. And former French president, Nikola Sarkozy, is going to prison. He's received a five-year sentence after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Sarkozy continues to insist he is innocent and will, quote, sleep in prison but with his head held high. The court has found that Sarkozy allowed his aides to reach out to the late Libyan dictator Mohamar Gaddafi for campaign funds, but it could not determine if that money ended up financing his presidential bid in 2007.
