Starting point is 00:00:57 Donald Trump heading out of the White House on Friday. morning talking about the charges against James Comey. It's not a list, but I think there'll be others. I mean, they're corrupt. These were corrupt, radical left Democrats. But Comey essentially was a, he's worse than a Democrat. That came hours after Trump posting on his truth social website that a, quote, crooked Joe Biden appointed judge will oversee the case.
Starting point is 00:01:22 The charges brought by a prosecutor recently appointed by the Trump administration, one of Trump's personal lawyers who has no exception. experience as a federal prosecutor. My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system. Comey, in a video posted on Instagram late Thursday, says he's innocent. So let's have a trial and keep the faith. A court appearance is expected October 9th, and he's had already.
Starting point is 00:01:48 CBC News, Washington. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a defiant speech at the UN General Assembly earlier today. He denounced the growing international support for a Palestinian state and doubled down on the need to keep fighting in Gaza. Sasha Petrasek has more. As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to the podium, his delegation clapped while dozens from other countries walked out of the hall in protest.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Israel rebounded from its darkest day to deliver one of the most stunning military comebacks. He boasted of bombing, Iran, Syria, and Yemen, and targeting in killing. killing top Hamas leaders in Gaza. Civilian casualties there, he said, were lower than you could expect. He rejected accusations of genocide. What a joke. Saying Israel's trying to get civilians to leave areas it's attacking. He offered no new solutions to end the war except to continue fighting. As for the growing list of countries recognizing a Palestinian state, he accused them of caving to Islamist hordes. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Canada's GDP grew slightly in July following three months of declines. The economy grew by 0.2 percent, boosted by mining, manufacturing, and wholesale trade. Canada's GDP had shrunk in the second quarter, an economists were watching the July numbers closely. Two straight quarters of contraction would have meant a technical recession, something Canada appears to have avoided. A new wildfire near Peachtland, BC, has four. residents of more than 300 homes to evacuate. The BC Wildfire Service says the fire was discovered yesterday and has rapidly spread to 74 hectares.
Starting point is 00:03:39 They also say it appears to be human-caused. Shea Stearns is a fire information officer. She says the Wildfire Service is watching closely going into the weekend. We do have some gusty winds in that area right now, which are contributing to that heightened fire activity. It's still classified as out of control, and we have resources responding. More than 40 firefighters are at the scene. About 1,100 homes are also under an evacuation alert,
Starting point is 00:04:05 meaning they have to be ready to leave at a moment's notice. And a man from Milestone, Saskatchewan is marking a milestone of his own. This week, 74-year-old Jim Hadfield finished baking more than 700 fruit cakes in his home kitchen. He says he's been getting more and more orders every year for his dark and sticky cakes. Everybody loves them, and that shows because I'm baking 20, percent more than I baked last year. Hatfield says this year's feet required more than 1,800 eggs and
Starting point is 00:04:34 325 pounds of butter. Now that they're baked, the cakes will be basted and rum or liqueur that ensures they pack a serious punch by the time they're sent to homes around the country in time for Christmas. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey.
