Starting point is 00:00:00 Too many students are packed into overcrowded classrooms in Ontario schools, and it's hurting their ability to learn. But instead of helping our kids, the Ford government is playing politics, taking over school boards and silencing local voices. It shouldn't be this way. Tell the Ford government to get serious about tackling overcrowded classrooms because smaller classes would make a big difference for our kids. Go to Building Better Schools.ca.
Starting point is 00:00:27 A message from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Hurland. Prime Minister Mark Carney is throwing his support behind U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza. On Monday, Trump alongside the Israeli Prime Minister, unveiled the proposal. It would involve a ceasefire and a handover of Gaza to international forces. In return, the Palestinian militant group Hamas, would release all the Israeli hostages and disarm. Sasha Petrissik has more.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Let's call it eternal peace in the Middle East. With a flourish that promised to end what he calls centuries of death and destruction, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled his peace plan, endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after a three-hour meeting at the White House. I support your plan to end the war in Gaza, which achieves our war aims.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Trump's proposal calls for an immediate end of the Gaza War, the release of hostages within 72 hours after that, followed by a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. That would be followed by an international administration and peacekeeping force, and maybe one day a government led by Palestinians themselves. A pathway to a Palestinian state is offered if many other conditions are met. Hamas received the proposal shortly after the meeting. Sasha Petrissik, CBC News, Jerusalem. We're following a developing story in Indonesia. A school has collapsed in East Java, killing at least one student.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Rescue teams are trying to saw through the rubble. Dozens of students are injured and 65 were presumed buried under a mangle of concrete and metal. Water and oxygen are being given to the young people who are trying to. More than 100 students had gathered for afternoon prayers in a building that was undergoing an expansion that wasn't authorized. Alberta's 51,000 public school teachers have voted to reject a three-year tentative agreement with the province. Teachers voted 89.5% to reject the contract that was offered to them. And just minutes after that result was announced, the Alberta Teachers Association released a statement saying they'll go on strike starting next Monday, October 6th. The federal government has designated the Indian-based Bishnoi gang a terrorist entity.
Starting point is 00:03:04 The gang has been linked to extortion threats targeting businesses in B.C., Alberta, and Ontario. Yasmine Rania has more. This is the right move. BC Premier David E.B. is applauding Ottawa's decision, saying business owners are living in fear of extortion threats. This is an important move that could make our streets safer. I hope the police are able to use these tools quickly. Listing a group as a terrorist entity in Canada gives the federal government the power to freeze or seize property, vehicles, and money, and gives Canadian law enforcement additional tools to prosecute terrorist offenses. RCMP have accused the Lawrence Bishnoi gang based in northern India of orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation
Starting point is 00:03:46 against members of the South Asian community in B.C., Alberta, and Ontario. The new designation also gives federal immigration officials the right to deny. people associated with a gang entry to Canada. Yasmin Ranea, CBC News, Vancouver. The Saskatchewan government has apologized to survivors of the Isle Lacrosse Residential School. It's located about 460 kilometers north of Saskatoon. The province will pay more than $40 million in restitution to former students and their families. The Isle Lacrosse School predated the federal residential school system, and because of that, it was not included in the settlement deal of 2006. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Hurland.
Starting point is 00:04:55 too.
