From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Stephanie Scanderas. The Trump administration says all soldiers in combat roles must meet what it calls the highest male standard. The president and his defense secretary today shared a litany of complaints and announced changes to the military, and they say those who don't like it should quit. Katie Nicholson reports.
Please take your seats. Before hundreds of top U.S. military brass, defense secretary Pete Hexson,
Seth, railed against wokeness and progressive values in the military,
promising to review how it defines and investigates complaints of bullying and hazing.
And he stressed how soldiers should look.
It's tiring to look out at combat formations or really any formation and see fat troops.
Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon.
And called for combat standards to return to the highest male level.
If that means no women qualify for some combat jobs, so be it.
In a wide-ranging address, U.S. President,
Donald Trump suggested using so-called dangerous American cities as military training grounds.
They spit, we hit.
And that police and military be allowed to retaliate if their vehicles are hit by bricks.
You get out of that car and you can do whatever ahead you want to do.
Katie Nicholson, CBC News, Toronto.
And President Trump says Hamas has three or four days to respond to his Gaza peace proposal.
Trump announced the plan yesterday following a three-hour White House meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu.
The plan has the backing of a number of Arab and European nations, as well as Canada.
Dozens of families have been forced from their homes in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley.
The Lake George Wildfire broke out Sunday and rapidly grew to 300 hectares.
Officials say those who have not been evacuated should be ready to go at a moment's notice.
David Corkham is mayor of Kings County.
He wants people to take evacuation notices seriously.
The woods and area is still very, very dry and no rain in sight for another week or two.
So it's still a desperate situation and people have to be very, very careful.
And this is a prime example of how things can get out of hand very quickly.
This fire just mushroomed.
This fire broke out not long after a nearby fire at Long Lake was brought under control.
The Federal Energy Minister says he's disappointed with Imperial Oil's
plan to lay off 20% of its workforce by 2027. That equals 900 positions, most of them based in
Calgary. Tim Hodgson says he's working to understand the company's decision, and he promises
that government will explore ways to support the workers losing their jobs. Calgary-based
Imperial says the cuts are part of a restructuring plan.
An orange shirt day event was held in downtown Toronto,
one of many across the country marking the fifth national day for truth and reconciliation.
Nearly a decade ago, the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission made its 94 calls to action.
But as David Thurton reports, the progress has been slow.
Those 94 calls this December and how far have we come as a country?
You know, we have a lot of work to do on the truth and reconciliation.
Cindy Woodhouse-Dipanak, the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations,
urging follow-through on the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The commission heard from thousands of residential school survivors
and issued 94 calls to action.
According to a CBC analysis, about a dozen have been completed.
And, you know, how far have we come on each of those calls to make this country a more just society for everyone?
and to close the infrastructure gap.
In an interview with CBC's power in politics,
Governor General Mary Simon said reconciliation is more than just ticking boxes.
It's a lifelong commitment.
It's one of those values that transcend policy development.
For the Governor General, reconciliation is bigger than just one day.
