From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Stephanie Scandaris.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Canadian baseball fans hoping to travel to New York next week to cheer on the Blue Jays may want to rethink those plans. The Yankees are restricting sales of playoff tickets to locals only. Thomas Dagla explains. I think that's terrible. Ask Blue Jays fans in Toronto and you'll get an earful. I feel like that is a very classic Yankees moved. The Jays could be headed to the Bronx next week.
Starting point is 00:01:00 week. But those rival Yankees are selling postseason tickets online only to residents of New York and three other neighboring states to prevent scalping, meaning Canadian residents are barred from logging on to Ticketmaster and buying passes to what could be Toronto's first playoff series victory in nearly a decade. And Jay's fans are known to travel. Sarah Hakeem, a Canadian living nearby, recently captured the moment, Oh Canada was sung at Yankee Stadium. There were tons of Jays. I saw jerseys all over walking. Everyone was supporting their own team.
Starting point is 00:01:33 The Yankees aren't the only team doing this. The Jays also aimed to keep Rogers Center tickets in the hands of Canadian fans by restricting online sales to buyers with a Canadian address. Thomas Dagg, CBC News, Toronto. Alberta's premier condemns the decision by teachers in the province to reject the latest tentative agreement. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Danielle Smith says the government's latest offer was
Starting point is 00:01:58 the highest wage increase proposed in over a decade. Teachers are now on track to strike as of October 6th. Smith says if that happens, parents of children under 12 will receive $150 a week per child. We have taken steps to ensure that our kids can keep learning and parents are compensated for expenses they may face from the union's actions. Our government will provide learning resources for students
Starting point is 00:02:22 and compensation for added costs faced by their families. The Alberta Teachers Association says the union does not currently have plans for further bargaining. Members say the province fails to address unsustainable class sizes and high inflation. In Nova Scotia, firefighters are battling an out-of-control wildfire in Annapolis Valley. The Lake George Wildfire has burned roughly 300 hectares. Dozens of families have been told to leave their homes. Brett Ruskin has more from Halifax. We're recommending everyone to pack a suitcase,
Starting point is 00:02:56 David Corkham is mayor of King's County. That community is suddenly facing evacuation orders and the looming threat of an out-of-control fire moving through the woods towards homes. Thankfully, we have lots of people, dedicated people, like I said, the Red Cross firefighters that are here doing everything that they can. Last night and again this morning, water bombers rumbled overhead,
Starting point is 00:03:21 scooping up from nearby lakes to try to control the fire. It's a situation we've seen a lot of in Nova Scotia this year with a busy fire season, including the largest fire near Long Lake, which burned roughly 40 kilometers from this new one. That fire destroyed 20 homes. That's something that crews are hopeful won't happen again here. Brett Ruskin, CBC News, Halifax. The head of the newly renamed U.S. War Department is vowing to reshape the military. It's tiring to look out at combat formations or really any formation. And see, fat troops.
Starting point is 00:03:56 One of many criticisms from Pete Hegseth. In an address to hundreds of generals and officers, the defense secretary denounced what he called toxic ideological garbage. He railed against the military's policies around diversity and pledged to raise the standard of physical fitness. Simply put, if you do not meet the male-level physical standards for combat positions, cannot pass a PT test or don't want to shave and look professional, it's time for a new position. or a new profession. Hegset says the policy would not prevent women from serving,
Starting point is 00:04:29 but it would require them to pass the highest male standard. A strong offshore earthquake has shaken the Central Philippines. The magnitude 6.9 quake happened off Bogos City in Cebu province. A number of buildings were damaged. Several people were injured by the falling debris. And that is your world this hour.
