Starting point is 00:00:41 jane goodall was 91 years old the british scientist championed environmental and human rights and advocated for the protection of the natural world jill english reports she was just 26 when she made her first groundbreaking discovery in the mountains of tanzania she watched chimpanzees use sticks to fish for termites. When she reported it back to her supervisor, her observation unraveled the very definition of what it means to be human. Man, the toolmaker, is how we were defined at that time.
Starting point is 00:01:12 So when I told Lewis, he sent back that famous telegram, saying, now we have to redefine man, redefine tool, or accept chimpanzees as humans. Goodall and her chimps quickly became cultural icons. Following decades of fieldwork, Goodall, felt called to share what she had learned about apes, the natural world, and by extension, humankind.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Into her 90s, she spent at least 300 days on the road each year, a scientist turned activist who bridged worlds and generations. Joe English, CBC News, Toronto. One person was killed and two others injured in a shooting at a Starbucks in LaValle, Quebec today. Quebec's public security minister, Ian LaFranier, says the shooting bears the hallmarks of organized crime, and in his words, there were no innocent victims. Three sources have confirmed to Radio Canada. The deceased is Harambalo's Theologu, also known as Bobby the Greek.
Starting point is 00:02:08 The 40-year-old was a major organized crime figure in Quebec. Those sources also say that the two injured people were members of Theologu's gang. CBC News has learned Ontario's marine land might be on the verge of bankruptcy. The federal government has also vetoed the theme park's plan to send some of its belugas overseas to a park in China. Thomas Degg has the latest. I'm an animal lover, and it's just a sad situation. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he's disappointed with the federal government's decision about the future of marine lands whales.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Ottawa has now denied the Niagara Falls theme parks request for a permit to export 30 belugas to a similar venue in China. If we want these whales to survive, we have to move them somewhere. Marine land did not reopen for this. year and began selling off its amusement rides. Now a source tells CBC News the theme park is on the brink of filing for bankruptcy. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson says she quashed marine lands plan after seeing the belugas up close. It was obvious to me that whales belong in the ocean. Thompson says if the belugas had been sent to China it would have meant a continued life
Starting point is 00:03:21 in captivity for them. Whether the whales will be euthanized or moved elsewhere is not yet clear. CBC News, Toronto. RCMP in Alberta are calling off the search for a missing six-year-old boy. Darius McDougal went missing 11 days ago while camping in southern Alberta. He had gone for a walk with several young relatives but never came back. Police had remained optimistic about the chances of finding him during the extensive search, but said over the weekend that his chances of survival had seriously decreased. And the White House says it will do all that it can to make sure Americans can maintain access
Starting point is 00:03:56 to essential services. The U.S. government has been shut down after Congress failed to reach a deal on funding it. Health care is at the heart of this disagreement. Democrats are demanding funding for health care subsidies that are set to expire soon for millions of people under the Affordable Care Act. Vice President J.D. Vance accuses them of operating in bad faith. Whatever those disagreements are, you don't shut down the government over it. For the first time since the Democrats have been in politics, they're now saying that unless we get Every policy item that we demand, we're going to shut down the people's government. They're trying to take a hostage, and we're not going to let them.
