Starting point is 00:00:47 two people were killed and four others were injured after a vehicle was driven into a crowd outside the synagogue Crystal Gamancing has a latest. Greater Manchester police are now confirming that the attacker was shot and killed by an armed officer. Confirmation was delayed because there were suspicious items near the remains. However, there has since been a controlled explosion at the site. The deadly incident at Heaton Park Synagogue is being described as a vehicle and knife attack. The embassy of Israel in the United Kingdom has condemned the attack, saying, such an act of violence should be perpetrated on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar
Starting point is 00:01:27 in a place of prayer and community is abhorrent and deeply distressing. Additional officers are now on site at synagogues in other Jewish venues, including in London. The mayor of London City can acknowledge just how many Jewish people have felt at risk, but offered some assurance saying everyone has the right to pray in safety and in peace. and he offered condolences to those who were killed and injured. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, London. The Trump administration is threatening to carry out mass job cuts across the Federal Public Service. The threats come on the second day of the U.S. government shutdown.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Willie Lowry reports from Washington. The Trump administration has been pretty adamant. It wants to use this shutdown as an opportunity to cut what it perceives as government waste. And that very well may mean laying people off. President Donald Trump on social media said, quote, Republicans must use this opportunity of Democrat forced closure to clear out dead wood, waste, and fraud. Billions of dollars can be saved.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Now White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt echoing the president's comments. Unfortunately, because the Democrats shut down the government, the president has directed his cabinet and the Office of Management and Budget is working with agencies across the board to identify where cuts can be made. that layoffs are imminent. And this all comes after a tumultuous year for federal employees. The Trump administration has already laid off tens of thousands of workers as part of the Department of Government Efficiency's efforts to reduce spending. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. Senior European leaders are meeting today in Copenhagen with Russia dominating the agenda.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Matta Fredrickson is the Prime Minister of Denmark. I think everybody underestimated how big a threat Russia action is. not saying that we haven't done anything because we are doing a lot. And my hope is that everybody will recognize that we have to look at Ukraine as the first line of defense. So everything we do in Ukraine is defending ourselves and the rest of Europe. Denmark and Poland have both been seeing drone activity in recent weeks that they say appears to be Russian. And Fredrickson says Europe needs to arm itself for a hybrid war, one that combines drone and cyber technology. Canada's budget watchdog is saying that gains are being made in closing the country's housing affordability gap.
Starting point is 00:03:56 However, the Parliamentary Budget Office says the picture looks different depending on where you live. The biggest improvements in recent months are being reported in cities such as Toronto and Hamilton. But in Calgary, Montreal and Quebec City, affordability pressures persist. The PBO tracks housing affordability by measuring average home prices against what the average household can afford. Health Canada says more than 5 million Canadian. have now signed on to the National Dental Care Program. Here is Health Minister Marjorie Michel. At a time of rising living cost,
