Starting point is 00:00:00 Too many students are packed into overcrowded classrooms in Ontario schools, and it's hurting their ability to learn. But instead of helping our kids, the Ford government is playing politics, taking over school boards and silencing local voices. It shouldn't be this way. Tell the Ford government to get serious about tackling overcrowded classrooms because smaller classes would make a big difference for our kids.

Alberta is reporting the first death in its measles outbreak. A newborn baby has died, and critics are doubling down on calls for the province to do more to curb the virus. Sam Samson reports. Officials say the baby died shortly after it was born, after contracting measles while in the womb. Alberta's health minister sent condolences to the family and added anyone planning a pregnancy should have two doses.
Starting point is 00:01:00 of measles vaccine prior to conception. Since the measles outbreak began in the spring, many physicians and scientists have pressed Alberta officials to do more to address the virus, including special vaccine clinics and stronger outreach. Alberta NDP health critic Sarah Hoffman added to that criticism. I'm blaming the government for allowing things to get as bad as they are and for the outbreak to have been as terrible as it is.
Starting point is 00:01:24 And Lenora Saxinger, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Alberta, says disinformation about measles vaccines has to be addressed. This risk to babies can be contained if we actually look at, you know, the true science and the true data around the safety and the effectiveness of these vaccines. Alberta has the second highest number of measles cases so far this year. Sam Sampson, CBC News, Edmonton. British police say the man suspected of carrying out Thursday's deadly attack at a synagogue was a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Jihad al-Shamee was shot and killed by officers in Manchester. He's alleged to have killed two people and send four others to hospital in a car ramming and stabbing attack. Prime Minister Karas Dharmer says it was an act of hate against the Jewish community. We must be clear. It is a hatred that is rising once again. And Britain must defeat it once again. The incident happened on the Jewish Holy Day of Yom Kippur. The UK authorities say they've stepped up.
Starting point is 00:02:25 police patrols outside synagogues across the country. Officials have arrested three others in connection with this incident on suspicion of preparing and instigating acts of terrorism. Families in Indonesia are grieving, fearing their children are dead following the collapse of a school, and news from search teams that there are no more signs of life in the rubble. The building gave way Monday, killing five people and injuring dozens more. At least 59 teenagers are still. missing. Crews are now using heavy machinery to clear the wreckage. Faulty construction is blamed for
Starting point is 00:03:00 the disaster. Ottawa says 5.2 million Canadians are enrolled in the federal dental plan, but only about half those people have gone for treatment. Some may have simply hate going to the dentist, but others have discovered that some dentists are charging more than the federal plan will play. Pay. Marenda von Stakelberg explains. The influx is quite a lot. Ottawa dentist, Min Pham, is so busy treating patients through the Canadian dental care plan, he's opened his clinic on Sundays. Another reason why Dr. Pham might be so busy,
Starting point is 00:03:32 he's charging only what the federal government will reimburse. So if people show up with a card with 100% coverage, they get freedom to care. But that's not what most dentists are doing. Unlike other public programs, the Canadian dental care plan lets clinics balance bill. That means they can charge more than what Ottawa will cover. that dollar amount can vary greatly.
Starting point is 00:03:53 But Dr. Bruce Ward with the Canadian Dental Association says balance billing is one of the reasons why nearly all dental clinics are now accepting patients through the program. To restrict the amount that dentists can charge for any given procedure would make things more difficult for the dental offices. Marina von Stackleberg, CBC News, Ottawa.
