Starting point is 00:00:00 How do you know Dwayne the Rock Johnson? Is it as a mega movie star in Jumanji or The Fast and the Furious? Is it as Maui in Disney's Moana? Or are you a wrestling fan and you still smell what the rock is cooking? In the new film The Smashing Machine, Dwayne goes back to his fighting roots. And there's only one guy he wanted to direct the film, Benny Safdi. Benny will tell you about directing the movie. Dwayne Johnson is calling the most challenging of his career.
Starting point is 00:00:25 You can hear that now on cue with me, Tom Power, wherever you get your podcasts, including YouTube. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilfrey. Hamas has agreed to immediately enter negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages. This is a very special day, maybe unprecedented in many ways. U.S. President Donald Trump welcoming the announcement and calling on Israel to stop bombing Gaza. Hamas, however, did not agree unconditionally to the points outlined in an
Starting point is 00:01:00 an American peace plan, Sasha Petrasek, has the latest. There seem to be some positive signals from both Hamas and U.S. President Donald Trump. Hamas' statement except some key points in Trump's peace plan, like releasing hostages and handing over power. But it also calls for negotiations on significant details, like timing. Hamas also says it won't disarm until Israeli troops leave Gaza altogether. Trump's plan demands the reverse for Hamas to disarm right away. Still, Trump's answer posted on social media suggests he's open to talking.
Starting point is 00:01:41 I believe they are ready for lasting peace, he says. We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. He goes on to say that Israel must stop bombing Gaza immediately so that hostages can be released safely and quickly. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News. Jerusalem. Sean Diddy Combs has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison. The hip-hop mogul had previously been convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Speaking in court, Combs apologized for his behavior and called it disgusting, shameful, and sick. The judge said he was unconvinced that Combs would not commit the same crimes if he were released.
Starting point is 00:02:23 The Federal Public Safety Minister wants to know what caused two IT outages at Canada's borders this week. Gary Ananda Sangaree is giving the Canada Border Services Agency 30 days to come up with a plan to prevent future blackouts. As Philip Lee-Shanac tells us, the outage caused chaos at border crossings and airports. Started seeing the signs on the interstate, saying that the Canadian border was closed. Truck driver Eve Dwaron was headed back to New Brunswick,
Starting point is 00:02:50 but ended up stranded in New York State. Ended up being stuck on the side of the road for over 30 hours. Canada Border Services Agency says a system outage caused delays in commercial processing, mainly at ports of entry in southern Ontario. I would say the last two to three years, systems failure is on a far more regular basis. Stephen Laskowski is with the Canadian Trucking Association. He says many of the more than 12,000 trucks across the border per day were idle. It's not like the lights have gone out in your home and you're annoyed. That means trade isn't moving across the border.
Starting point is 00:03:25 The CBSA says it will produce a report on what caused the outage and a plightage and a plan to prevent them in the future. IT issues also hit inspection kiosks at Canadian airports causing delays for passengers across the country. Philip Lyshannock, CBC News, Toronto. Canada's Postal Workers Union says the latest offer from the Postal Service is insulting. Canada Post's latest proposal contained the same wage increase offer as their last one, just over 13% over four years. It also removed a signing bonus for employees and appeared to clear the path for future layoffs. The union says Canada Post is attempting to turn the public against them and is, quote, making a mockery of the collective bargaining process.
Starting point is 00:04:07 And U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegesith says he ordered another strike on a small boat off the coast of Venezuela. In a social media post, he says that U.S. intelligence confirmed that the four people on board were narco-terrorist trafficking drugs. This is the fourth strike on boats in the Caribbean that the U.S. administration accused of ferrying drugs. There was no immediate response from Venezuela, but President Nicholas Maduro has previously condemned the strikes and said his country will defend itself against U.S. aggression. It also comes one day after President Donald Trump declared that the U.S. was in a, quote, armed conflict with drug cartels. And that is The World This Hour. From CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey.
