Starting point is 00:00:00 Too many students are packed into overcrowded classrooms in Ontario schools, and it's hurting their ability to learn. But instead of helping our kids, the Ford government is playing politics, taking over school boards and silencing local voices. It shouldn't be this way. Tell the Ford government to get serious about tackling overcrowded classrooms because smaller classes would make a big difference for our kids.

A message from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario. from cbc news the world this hour i'm mike miles as wildfires continue in nova scotia the provincial government is standing wildfire season until halloween and keeping a burn ban in place the season typically ends mid-october this as residents of one western counter of finally returning home to long lake annapolis valley and a monumental cleanup jane smonigle reports that there's some, the glass from the window that was from the garage, it actually melted. Jason Burton's garage had been a two-story building for family birthday parties and hangouts. Now, scrap metal. Burton knows he's lucky.
Starting point is 00:01:11 The Long Lake fire that took 20 homes spared his, but barely. Actually, things were about five feet away from our back deck. That makes me feel like there was more than a miracle that happened. Why are our host and catch fire? Burton says sprinkler systems set up by firefighters protected his home. There's only some minor damage to an eaves trough and window. Life isn't completely back to normal. Burton's well water still needs to be tested before being used for drinking and cooking.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Burton has advice for those who are now evacuated from their homes and cottages in neighboring Kings County because of the wildfire there. Lean on the support from family and friends. He says that's what helped him. Jane Sponigal, CBC News. but still how is in Nova Scotia. Scattered explosions lit up with the sky over Gaza overnight, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump told Israel to stop bombing. Trump's order came after Hamas said it agreed to negotiate the release of all the hostages held there
Starting point is 00:02:08 and accepted parts of Trump's 20-point plan to end the fighting in Gaza. Janice Stein is founding director of the Monk School of Global Affairs. She says having both sides agree to different parts of the deal is a big step forward. Trump is asking Israel to stop. firing immediately, and Amas has agreed to release the hostages. Those are critical first steps. They have not agreed to disarm until there is a full withdrawal. That was correct. That's down the road. But what they've agreed on is significant. Israel says it is getting ready to implement the first part of the Trump plan, the release of

Munich's airport is slowly starting operations after drones again were seen nearby, forcing officials to delay opening nearly two hours later than scheduled. Munich's airport was first plagued Thursday night by unconfirmed drone sightings. Airports across Europe have been bedeviled by drones in recent weeks, with some authorities suspecting Russia and Moscow denying any part in it. Prince Edward Island's Liberal Party is holding its first contested leadership convention, rather, in more than 20 years. The party's been languishing on the opposition benches for nearly seven years.
Starting point is 00:03:23 As Wayne Tippettel reports, it's hoping a new leader will turn its fortunes around. The new leader of the Liberal Party of P.EI. It's been more than two decades since P.EI Liberals had a contested leadership race. Robert Giz went on to win all but four seats in the legislature in the 2007 election. But a lot has changed since Giz stepped down 10 years ago. The party has gone through two more leaders and only holds four seats now. But Robert Mitchell says change is in the air. The former Liberal MLA and cabinet minister is one of two people running to lead the party.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Even though we may have had a few struggling years in the past, I think we're at a good place now. The party's president, Katie Morello, says liberals are ready to take back power in PEI. This leadership process has been crucial to our preparedness for that next election. That fixed election date is October 27. But with every other PEI political party electing a new leader, some say that election call could come early next year. Wayne Timito, CBC News, Charlottetown.
