Why do bad mothers make for such compelling stories?
According to the writer Emma Knight, the messiness of motherhood is exactly what makes it interesting.
And we talked all about that on my podcast bookends.
Every week on the show, I sit down for honest conversations with today's literary stars.
We cover a lot of different ground about their lives, their inspirations, their writing,
and of course, also we talk about their mothers.
If you have a mom good or bad, you should check out bookends with their writing.

Israeli attacks continue despite renewed efforts to bring peace to Gaza.
A man in Gaza City weeps saying his brother has been killed in one of many airstrikes today.
Israel's military says the region remains a dangerous combat zone
despite Donald Trump telling Israel the bombing must stop.
The U.S. President delivered his edict in response to Hamas accepting part of his Gaza peace plan.
This is a big day. We'll see how it all turns out. We have to get the final word down in concrete.
Very importantly, I look forward to having the hostages come home.
We're very hopeful that leadership.
The release of the hostages, both dead and alive, is one of the things Hamas has agreed to.
but they want to negotiate some aspects of Trump's 20-point plan
and didn't address the demand that Hamas disarm.
Some family members of the hostages are thanking Trump for his efforts,
and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is preparing
to immediately implement the first phase of Trump's plan.
Operations are slowly returning to normal at Munich Airport
after yet another drone sighting for the second time in less than 24 hours,
Both runways were forced to close, and it's the latest in a series of drone sightings that have disrupted flights across Europe.
EU Interior Ministers gathered today to discuss how to track and destroy the devices.
Dominic Volaitis has the latest.
Although delays are expected, planes are once again taking off and landing at Munich Airport this morning.
Following last night's drone sighting, some 6,500 passengers were left stranded after the airport was forced to close.
Stefan Kraschansky is a drone expert.
So the drone incursions we are seeing over the last few weeks
are basically a kind of a test,
how the authorities, especially police and also military, react to those kind of threats.
There have been a series of incidents involving drones in recent weeks,
with airports in Denmark and Norway also forced to close for several hours.
This week, Russia's Vladimir Putin denied Moscow
had anything to do with the drones in response.
Germany says it intends
to raise the matter of anti-drone defences later today
at a meeting of European Interior Ministers.

Japan is set to pick its first female Prime Minister.
Sainai Takahichi was chosen as new leader of Japan's ruling party,
the Liberal Democrats.
The party has been trying to regain public support
after losing parliamentary majorities.
Currently, the LDP leads a corner.
coalition governments. A parliamentary vote on the 15th will decide whether she becomes prime
minister. Flu and COVID shots become available this month for Canadians across the country,
and doctors are particularly urging those at high risk, such as older Canadians and those with
underlying chronic illnesses to get them. Whether the shots are free varies from jurisdiction
to jurisdiction. The cost of a Royal Canadian Air Force fly past during King Charles's visit to Ottawa
last spring was more than $824,000, and that's just the flypast.
In total, the Department of National Defense spent $1.28 million on the two-day visit.
Canada's baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays, are getting ready to open their American League
Division Series against the New York Yankees.
Go Jays, go.
They're ticking it all the way.
We won it all, so we're right behind them.
Last time they were good 10 years ago, I was not even 10.
The Boys of Summer will host New York in a few hours in their best of five series.
This is the furthest Toronto has made it in the postseason since 2016.
