Starting point is 00:00:41 trying to hammer out the details on a ceasefire for hostages deal brokered by the trump administration the americans say hamas has agreed to release all hostages dead or alive but israel hasn't followed a directive from the u.s president to stop its offensive in gaza shosh bedrosian is a spokesperson for Israeli government. While certain bombings have actually stopped inside of the Gaza Strip, there's no ceasefire in place at this point in time, although there has been this temporary halt in certain bombings. The Prime Minister has given orders actually to fire for defensive purposes if there is a threat to their life. Meanwhile, Gaza health authorities say Israel is continuing to bomb the occupied territory. Funerals were held today for some of the dozens killed overnight.
Starting point is 00:01:32 On social media, U.S. President Donald Trump demanded that Israel stop all bombing immediately. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin is warning the U.S. about its involvement with Ukraine. In a video released today, the Russian president says if Washington supplies Ukraine with long-range missiles, It would destroy the relationship with Moscow. Last month, Vice President J.D. Vance said the Trump administration was considering Keeves' request to send Tomahawk missiles. That would give Ukraine the ability to strike deep into Russia. But so far, the White House has not announced a decision. In Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Air defense systems tried to shoot down drones and missiles over Lviviv overnight. Ukrainian officials say Russia launched a massive attack, sending more than 50 ballistic missiles and about 500 drones across several regions. At least five people were killed. The strikes prompted Poland and allied NATO forces to scramble fighter jets to protect its airspace. Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, continues to accuse Moscow of targeting civilian infrastructure. Tens of thousands of households have been left without power. Russia says it destroyed 32 Ukrainian drones overnight. Syria is holding the first parliamentary elections in the country since the fall of the Assad regime. It's to establish a legislative body while the country moves away from its authoritarian past. But the vote is also causing some controversy, with critics calling it undemocratic.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Dominic Volitis has that story. The polls are open in Syria for what is a landmark election. Some like Sami Hindawi from Aleppo believe today's vote for the People's Assembly will eventually lead to a brighter future for their country. We hope they will proceed towards the better, God-willing, she says. But others, like Sanaar al-Ali from Damascus, are sceptical. Frankly, I'm not hopeful for anything, he says. Today's vote is as controversial as it is significant.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Two-thirds of seats will be filled through electoral colleges, rather than by direct popular vote. with the remaining one-third appointed directly by interim president Ahmed al-Sharah, a system critics claim that will favour those who are well connected to Syria's new rulers.
