Did you know that it was once illegal to shop on Sundays?
That's true for when I was born. I remember this, and I'm not that old. I'm not, okay? Leave me alone.
Anyway, I'm Phelan Johnson, and I host See You in Court, a new podcast about the cases that changed Canada and the ordinary people who drove that change.
From the drugstore owner who defied the Lord's Day, to the migma man who defended his treaty right to fish, to the gay teacher who got fired and fought back.
Find and follow, see you in court, wherever you get your.
your podcasts.
From CBC News, The World This Hour.
I'm Kate McGilfrey.
Negotiators for Israel, Hamas, and the U.S. are gathering in Egypt, preparing to hammer out
the details on a ceasefire for hostages deal brokered by the Trump administration.
The Americans say Hamas has agreed to release all hostages, dead or alive, but Israel has
not followed a directive from the U.S. president to stop attacks in Gaza.
Shosh Bedrosian.
is a spokesperson for the Israeli government.
While certain bombings have actually stopped inside of the Gaza Strip,
there's no ceasefire in place at this point in time,
although there has been this temporary halt in certain bombings.
The Prime Minister has given orders actually to fire for defensive purposes
if there is a threat to their life.
Meanwhile, Palestinian health authorities say Israel is continuing lethal strikes in Gaza.
Funerals were held, were held,
today for some of the dozens killed overnight.
Still, there is new and very cautious optimism for those on both sides of the conflict.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this morning the deal will face a stress test
as negotiations begin in Cairo tomorrow.
This is the closest we've come to getting all of the hostages released every single one,
all 48, including the 28 who are deceased, of course the 20 that are still alive.
But there's a lot of pitfalls along the way.
There's some work to be done here.
We're hoping it will be finalized very quickly early this week.
If it doesn't, then I think the entire deal becomes imperiled.
The war in Gaza has been going on for almost two years.
Tuesday marks the second anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel.
Almost 1,000 people have been trapped on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest by a blizzard.
Roads in the area are blocked.
Chinese state media says rescue efforts are underway, trying to get people safely off the mountain.
They're trapped at 4,900 meters or not.
19,000 feet above sea level.
Parents in Alberta are bracing for a teacher's strike.
The union is scheduled to walk off the job tomorrow.
This afternoon, thousands of teachers were out protesting.
Emma Gell has more.
From public education!
The fight for public education rally bookends months of negotiations
and two failed deals between the province and the union
representing over 50,000 teachers.
In Edmonton, around 18,000 people have flooded
the legislature grounds to send a message to the government.
Chauvin Lamb, a public school teacher, was there.
Our classroom conditions are ridiculous.
I don't have enough space for all my dust.
This has to change because our kids deserve better.
Teachers say classroom size and complexity, coupled with too few resources and low pay
are major issues.
Finance Minister Nate Horner's office tells the CBC that the recent deal is fair
and the government has a responsibility to taxpayers to negotiate within reason.
The government says it will provide supports for families
as teachers are gearing up to strike Monday.
Amaja, CBC News, Edmonton.
In Quebec, the Federation representing family doctors
is asking the Labor Minister for arbitration.
Doctors have been trying to negotiate a new contract with the province,
one addressing their concerns about pay and working conditions,
but they've reached an impasse over the province's desire
to link pay to performance indicators.
Dr. Leon Koutur says doctors in other provinces
can ask for arbitration, and they should be able to do so in Quebec as well.
We have to take away this drama that the government puts up.
We want to really make sure that we get an agreement
and we get it done for the best interest of the public.
Their last contract expired in April 2023.
And the Toronto Blue Jays are currently in the midst of a remarkable game
against the New York Yankees.
Team Redfield!
It is a Grand Slam!
That's the Sportsnet call as Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Hit a Grand Slam Homer at the bottom of the fourth inning.
It is game two of their division series against the New York Yankees.
They won game one as well.
Right now, the score is sitting at 12 to 2 for the Blue Jays.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey.
Thank you.
