Starting point is 00:00:00 Why do bad mothers make for such compelling stories? According to the writer Emma Knight, the messiness of motherhood is exactly what makes it interesting. And we talked all about that on my podcast bookends. Every week on the show, I sit down for honest conversations with today's literary stars. We cover a lot of different ground about their lives, their inspirations, their writing, and of course, also we talk about their mothers. If you have a mom good or bad, you should check out bookends with their writing. Matea Roach, wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:00:38 From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Kate McGilvery. This week will be critical for the U.S. President's 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan. Delegations from Hamas, Israel, and the United States are gathering in Egypt, set to hold talks starting tomorrow in hopes of finalizing an agreement. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the deal could still run aground. This is the closest we've come to getting all of the hostages released, every single one, all 48, including the 28 who are deceased, of course, the 20 that are still alive. But there's a lot of pitfalls along the way. There's some work to be done here. We're hoping it will be finalized very quickly early this week.
Starting point is 00:01:15 If it doesn't, then I think the entire deal becomes imperiled. The war in Gaza has been going on for almost two years. Tuesday marks the second anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. Alberta teachers are set to strike on Monday morning. They've been in a labor dispute with the provincial government for months now. After a breakdown in talks, tens of thousands of teachers plan to walk off the job. Sam Sampson has the latest. Thousands of families are finding ways to deal with the province-wide teacher strike starting Monday.
Starting point is 00:01:44 It's a tipping point after months of negotiations between the province and the union. Teachers want more money, a cap on classroom sizes, and more resources for kids with complex needs. The province's latest offer included a 12% wage increase. and 3,000 more teachers. That was rejected by almost 90% of Alberta Teachers Association members. We fully support the teachers. Though she now has to figure out what her three-school-aged children will do during the strike, Beverly McCool, says she stands with educators.
Starting point is 00:02:14 And we're not asking for 15 student classrooms. Like, they're asking for 25 students. To help with the emergency child care, the province promised parents of children 12 and under $30 a day per child while the strike is underway. Fair deal. On Sunday, thousands gathered in Edmonton, Calgary, and other communities to show support for the strike. Sam Sampson, CBC News, Edmonton. The governor of Oregon says about 100 California National Guard troops arrived in his state, and more are coming.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Part of President Donald Trump's move to deploy federal troops in Democrat-led cities. Portland, Oregon isn't the only place in the crosshairs right now. As Steve Futterman reports, Chicago has also been singled out, with Trump characterizing both cities, as being rife with crime and unrest. As Donald Trump prepares to deploy 300 troops in Chicago, the verbal battle between the White House and officials in Illinois continues. Trump is again portraying Chicago as a city where no one is safe. When you can have 40 or 50 people killed over the last couple of months,
Starting point is 00:03:20 hundreds of people wounded. There's no place like that in the world. Illinois' Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker says, ICE agents are engaging in mass detentions, rounding up everyone in target areas. Instead of going after the bad guys, they're just picking up people who are brown and black and then checking their credentials. Are you a U.S. citizen? Homeland Security Chief Christy Noam amped up the rhetoric, accusing Pritzker of protecting criminals. His city is a war zone, and he's lying so that criminals can go in there and destroy people's lives.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Steve Futterman, CBC News, Los Angeles. 14 children are dead after consuming tainted cough syrup in central India. The Indian Health Ministry says tests revealed it contained diethylene glycol or DEG. The industrial solvent is highly toxic, even in the smallest amounts. A doctor who recommended the cough syrup and the drug manufacturer are both facing charges. And the Blue Jays are nearing the end of a remarkable game against the New York Yankees. That's the sports net call as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. That's the sports net call as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits a grand slam homer at the bottom of the fourth inning.
Starting point is 00:04:38 This is game two of their division series against the New York Yankees. They won game one yesterday as well. Right now, the score is sitting at 13 to 7 for the Blue Jays. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey. Thank you.
