Starting point is 00:00:40 Negotiators from Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas will meet with mediators in Cairo today to try to finalize a ceasefire deal to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas. The plan was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump last week. Trump is expressing optimism about the outcome. The countries of the world, a lot of the countries surrounding Israel, frankly, Muslim, Arab, and many others have had great meetings with Hamas. I think it's going to go very quickly. The meeting seems to be very good. We'll find out.
Starting point is 00:01:16 We'll let you know soon. Israel has not stopped its military campaign in Gaza, directly contradicting Trump's initial demand. But Trump says if Hamas tries to cling to power, it faces cum laude. complete obliteration. When the war in Gaza started, Canada launched an emergency temporary immigration program to bring extended families of Palestinian Canadians to this country. But as Rafi Bujiccanian reports, most applicants are still waiting. The Immigration Department says nearly 900 Palestinians have arrived to Canada through this program for extended family since last year, on a total of 5,000. Immigration lawyer Pantea Jafari
Starting point is 00:01:56 says Ottawa cannot keep delaying. Court decisions say even if your security screening is delayed in some situations, they would be required to move forward. Federal sources tell CBC there was resistance within government to the program due to security concerns and a preference on engaging with Israel over its wartime conduct. The Immigration Department says it is advocating with local authorities. Rafi Wuchikan, Yon-CBC News, Ottawa. 51,000 Alberta teachers are set to go on strike this morning.
Starting point is 00:02:29 They've been in a contract dispute with the provincial government for months. Now every public, Catholic, and French school teacher could be off the job. Sam Samson reports. More than 15,000 people packed onto the Alberta legislature ground Sunday, all to show support for striking teachers. The province's latest contract offer included a 12% wage increase over four years, and hiring 3,000 more teachers. The majority of the Alberta Teachers' Association's 51,000 members, voted against the offer,
Starting point is 00:03:03 leading to Alberta's first province-wide teacher strike. Jason Schilling is union president. Teachers are resolved. They've had enough of watching kids fall through the cracks. Alberta's finance minister has said his government offered what was asked and questioned whether the union actually knew what its members were seeking. The union says teachers want more money, a cap on classroom sizes, more resources for kids with complex needs. A provincial official told CBC News, the government
Starting point is 00:03:29 asked the union to go back to the bargaining table over the weekend, but they were not available for formal talks. Sam Samson, CBC News, Edmonton. Prime Minister Mark Carney will fly to Washington tonight for a meeting Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The trade war between Canada and the U.S. will be the main focus. The two countries are still trying to negotiate a new trade deal that could reduce tariffs. Kathy Hokel is the governor of New York State. She spoke this past weekend at an economic summit in Quebec City. We have to protect ourselves, not just in this short-term blip of history, which we all know is going to be over sometime soon. Starting point is 00:04:20 It includes the premiers of Ontario and Quebec, along with governors from Wisconsin to Michigan and New York. Well, the Toronto Blue Jays are one win away from advancing to the American League Championship Series after another win yesterday against the Yankees. The Jays get a remarkable performance from Trey Savage and offense everywhere as they beat the Yankees 13 to 7. The Jays are headed to New York for game three. And that is your world this hour.
