The liberal government is breaking with tradition of presenting a spring budget. Instead, it'll deliver all future budgets in the fall. Here's finance minister, Francois Philippe Champagne.

What we're trying to do is to provide more transparency, more clarity for Canadians. when you're going to look at the budget, you're going to open the page and you're going to be able to see, okay, where is the government of Canada investing my money? The federal government has not released a budget since April 24 under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The 2025-26 budget is set to be released on November 4th. The largest teacher strike in Alberta history has begun with classes canceled at some 2,000 elementary and high schools. Jason Schilling is the president of the Alberta Teachers Association.

He says he understands the impact of the strike on students and their families. Ideally, we would want a short strike so that we could get back to work, but we also know that we need to stand up for public education. We're in a crisis right now. A contract dispute between teachers and the province has dragged on for months, with the union voting against a contract offer last week. The province is offering some assistance to families, as the strike goes on, $30 per day for households with kids under 12.

Representatives of Hamas and Israel are in Egypt to discuss the implementation of Donald Trump's peace plan. The White House says it's working hard to move the ball forward as quickly as possible, but a number of sticking points remain. Sasha Petrissik reports. Around a Tel Aviv fountain that's turned into a shrine for hostages still held in Gaza, Israelis pray for a deal, hopeful but hesitant. I think we've been close to this juncture in the past. and we've been optimistic and hopeful and then been disappointed.

Mediators and negotiators are meeting in Egypt, closer perhaps than ever to an agreement to end the war, to exchange Israeli hostages for Palestinians in jails, and to stop fighting, feeling the pressure from an impatient U.S. President Donald Trump. It'll last a couple of days. We'll see how it turns out, but I'm hearing it's going very well. Officials say it will take a few days to see if the sides are, are close enough and conciliatory enough. There's new political upheaval in France following the swift resignation of its Prime Minister this morning. Sebastian Le Corneux says it would take very little for France to succeed politically, but today is not that day. The Prime Minister stepped down, hours after naming a new cabinet, and after parties of all stripes, threatened to vote it down. Le Corneux blames the government collapse on the inability of politicians

to compromise. He was in the role for only 27 days. The resignation now puts further pressure on President Emmanuel Macron to call snap elections or resign. The Edmonton Oilers have locked down their superstar captain, at least for another couple of years. Connor McDavid has signed an extension with the team keeping him under contract through 2008. Sarah Reed has the details. After months of speculation, it's the news Oilers fans have been waiting for. As McDavid scores, Gabe winner. Captain Connor McDavid has signed a two-year contract extension worth $12.5 million a year. The deal means he's making the same amount as the eight-year contract he signed back in 2017. His re-signing comes after questions about what his future with the team would look like, following the team's second straight loss in a Stanley Cup final to the Florida Panthers.
