From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. Prime Minister Mark Carney is at the White House this hour for trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. And while the prime minister is under pressure to land a tariff-relief agreement of some kind, so too is the president. Peter Armstrong has more.
Starting point is 00:00:56 There's a long and growing list of American... industries clamoring for relief from Donald Trump's trade war. The auto industry has complained loudly and publicly that the tariffs on auto parts are costing companies billions of dollars. Bourbon producers are lobbying for a carve-out that would protect their industry. American soybean farmers are expecting a bailout package as early as this week. None of that alone is enough to move Trump off his trade policies, but combined, they show how much and how deep Trump's tariffs are biting into the U.S. economy.
Starting point is 00:01:30 GDP growth has largely held up, but consumer confidence is weak, job growth has sharply dropped off. So cutting some kind of a deal today on, say, steel or car parts won't make the underlying problem go away, but it could by Trump some relief from those businesses looking to the White House to cut a check to support them as their costs continue to rise. Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Toronto. Two of the leaders of the truck convoy that took over downtown Ottawa in the winter of 2022 are scheduled. to be sentenced today. Both Chris Barber and Tamara Leach have been found guilty of mischief, with Barbara also convicted of counseling others to commit mischief. New research is showing that for the first time ever, wind and solar farms are generating more electricity than coal plants. Salimus Shivji has more. It's quite a revolutionary moment. A historic first, says Adair Turner, chair of the UK's Energy Transitions Commission. The report from Think Tank, Ember, looked at the first six months of this year. It shows the push for renewables was led by China and India.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Electricity demand rose, but the growth in solar and wind energy kept up with that pace. It's about new technology, says Turner, driving down the price of solar panel. Even if you didn't care about the, The climate is simply the cheapest way to produce electricity. But the report also shows a mixed picture, says Miles Allen, professor of geosystem science at Oxford University.
Starting point is 00:03:08 The developed world in the United States and across Europe relied more on dirty fossil fuels this year because electricity demand outstripped clean energy's capacity. Salima Shivji, CBC News, Mumbai. This year's recipients have been announced for the Nobel Prize in physics. John Clark, Michelle DeVore and John Martinez for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electric circuit. That's the Nobel Committee honoring three Americans for their work and expanding the study into quantum mechanics.
Starting point is 00:03:47 The Nobel announcements continue all this week with the Peace Prize being awarded on Friday. The nominating process is a closely guarded secret, but we do know that. supporters of Donald Trump have put the U.S. President's name forward for consideration. For the second time in two years, WestJet is raising its fee for a check bag. It's going up by $5 for an ultra-basic and economy fare. That means economy passengers who prepay will see the fee start at $40. If you wait until check-in, it'll cost you at least $60. Consumer advocates say they're watching now to see if Air Canada follows suit. Okay, Blue Jays in New York tonight, it's game three of the American League Divisional Playoff Series, with the Jays one win away from finishing off the Yankees.
