From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Hurland.
Mark Carney was back in Washington.
He had a working dinner tonight with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
It follows the second Oval Office meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump earlier on Tuesday.
As Tom Perry reports, the meeting was friendly but did not lead to any breakthrough on tariffs.
I think he's a great prime minister.
Donald Trump has made life miserable for some leaders who've sat down in his ever more gold-adorned Oval Office,
berating and belittling them in front of the cameras, but not Mark Carney.
I can tell you this because I deal with lots of leaders all over the world.
He's a world-class leader.
Kearney sat mostly silent as Trump fielded questions from reporters,
but tried to steer the conversation back to the topic he came here to discuss,
getting the U.S. to lift its tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum.
autos and lumber. We are the second largest trading partner of the United States. We do a lot of
trade going across the border where we're cooperating. In the end, the two sides agreed to
keep talking on key areas like steel, aluminum, and energy for all Trump's kind words. U.S.
tariffs for now remain in place. Tom Harry, CBC News, Washington.
Across Israel, there were solemn memorials Tuesday marking the second anniversary of the
October 7th attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Nearly 1,200 people were killed in Israel.
251 people were taken hostage into Gaza.
Paul Hunter visited one of the hardest hit communities in southern Israel.
It is a sobering place.
In a grassy field, row after row of placards on metal posts with flowers and handwritten notes
with the smiling faces of those killed on or near this spot precisely two years ago.
It is the memorial at the site of the Nova Music Festival in southern Israel.
Two years later, and artillery fire not far from the Nova Memorial is a near constant reminder.
Israel's response to the attacks, its brutal war on Hamas in Gaza itself continues on.
Among the placards at the Nova Memorial, those still in captivity, Lied Vitman, came to see the placard for the daughter of a good friend.
It's like you leaving it again. It's horrific times.
All of it. Two years later, leaving so many in this country still shaken.
Still morning. Paul Hunter, CBC News, at the site of the Nova Music Festival in southern Israel.
Two of the leaders of the truck convoy that took over downtown Ottawa in the winter of 2022 have received conditional sentences.
Both Chris Barber and Tamara Leach were found guilty of mischief.
Barber was also convicted of counseling others to commit mischief.
Defense lawyer Lawrence Greenspon says both Leach and Barber are considering appealing their convictions.
In Canada, constitutionally,
protected freedom of speech, which encourages peaceful assembly, must prevail over the rights of
property owners. On Tuesday, both were sentenced to 12 months of house arrest following by six
months of curfew and community service. Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Ottawa to reverse
its decision banning the export of marine lands beluga whales. The Ontario theme park says sending
its 30 remaining whales to China was its only option. It has now asked,
the federal government to pay for their upkeep. Ford says Ottawa needs to offer solutions.
It was the federal government that allowed them to bring these whales here. It should be the federal
government that allows them to move them to China or other marine areas that will take them.
The Federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister says Marine Land's request for money is inappropriate
and that Ontario also has a role to play. Marine land has warned it would start euthanizing the whales
if it didn't receive cash by Tuesday.
In baseball playoffs, the Toronto Blue Jays are in the Bronx tonight
playing against the New York Yankees in game three of the American League Division series.
The Yankees are ahead 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Jays started out tonight's game with a 6-1 lead,
but a series of mishap saw the Yankees pull ahead.
And that is your world this hour.
I'm Neil Hurland.
Thank you.
