plan for a ceasefire in gaza and the release of israeli hostages Israel and the palestinian militant
group hamas have now agreed to a deal that will finally end more than two years of war the cbc's
paul hunter has late details indeed there is a deal what a moment the israeli war on hamas in gaza now
two years in a day since it began after those Hamas attacks on Israel, October 7, 23, is being
paused. In short, it means an end to the fighting, at least for now, and the release of all
living hostages. Tonight, U.S. President Donald Trump putting on his truth social platform the
following. I'm very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first
phase of our peace plan. This means that all of the hostages will be released very soon and Israel will
withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line as the first steps toward a strong, durable,
and everlasting peace. Beyond Trump's descriptions, it's understood, the deal also includes the
release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. And importantly, for the many, many hundreds of
thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, in need of food, medicine, shelter, fresh water, it's also expected
aid will now start flowing into Gaza more freely. The agreement, the result of intense negotiations
between Israeli officials and Hamas intermediaries in Sharmel Sheikh Egypt,
mediated by the U.S. and with tremendous pressure from Donald Trump to get this done.
Tonight, that's happened.

And reaction is slowly trickling in tonight.
Maureen Lesham is a Toronto woman whose cousin Romi was held hostage by Hamas.
She was freed in January of this year and is alive.
I'm feeling genuinely optimistic.
This will happen.
You know, this news has brought a breath of life back into all of us for the first time in a really, really long time.
There's a sense of movement, and I see this as a universal human victory.
The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Gutierrez posted on the Platform X,
I urge all concerned to abide fully by the terms of the agreement.
All hostages must be released in a dignified manner.
A permanent ceasefire must be secured.
The fighting must stop.
and for all.
Conservative leader Pierre Palliab is accusing the Prime Minister of betraying Canadian
auto workers after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday failed to produce immediate
results.
Well, Mr. Speaker, we'll go soft on him today because I know he's still recovering from surgery
to have his elbows removed.
We haven't seen those elbows since the election.
Responding in question period, Carney insists his government is taking time to reach the best
deal possible for Canada.
Our agreement yesterday, the president myself, is to focus now on steel, on aluminum, on energy,
the building blocks of our broader competitiveness, including our auto sector.
Those negotiations on autos continue.
Carney left his key minister on the trade file behind in Washington to work on the sectoral trade
deals.
The liberal government has introduced a new border security bill in Parliament.
It mirrors an already tabled piece of legislation, but without some clauses that sparked concern from opposition parties and civil liberties group.
Gary Hernandez-Sangery is the public safety minister, he says the changes were made after months of consultation.
We felt that essentially putting forward a second bill that carves out the more contentious elements of Bill C2 will enable us to get swift or passage of the bill.
These contentious elements allowed Canada.
