Starting point is 00:00:39 Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have now agreed to a ceasefire deal that will stop more than two years of war and secure the release of the remaining Israeli hostages being held by Hamas. The deal comes after three days of talks in Egypt, based on a proposal announced last week by President Trump. The CBC's Paul Hunter just left Israel, We reached him tonight in London. A huge moment in the Middle East. An agreement to pause the two-year Israeli war on Hamas in Gaza. The war sparked by those Hamas attacks on Israel, October 7, 2023.
Starting point is 00:01:12 The headline here, an end to the fighting, at least for now, and the release of all hostages held in Gaza. Tonight, U.S. President Donald Trump, putting on his truth social platform the following. I'm very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first phase of our peace plan. This means that all of the hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line as the first steps toward a strong, durable, and everlasting peace. The deal still has to go before Israel's cabinet. If it signs off on it, Israeli forces will begin withdrawing to that agreed-upon line, Trump mentions.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Hamas then has 72 hours to release the living hostages, but there's already the suggestion that could happen as early as Saturday. It's also understood the deal includes as well the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and of huge importance to Gazans. It's also expected humanitarian aid will start flowing into Gaza more freely. The agreement comes after a U.S. proposed peace plan announced last week an intense negotiation since then between Israeli officials and Hamas intermediaries brokered by the U.S. and with tremendous pressure from Trump to get this done. Tonight, that's happened. HUNTER, CBC News, London. And we're getting Canadian reaction tonight to news of this breakthrough deal to end the war in Gaza.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Omar Omar lives in Victoria and has family in Gaza. I'm just extremely happy that at least there is a stopping for all the madness of killing people in the Gaza Strip. My family has finally got the chance to breathe. I got the chance finally to at least breathe. And Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement just minutes ago. He says, believe that the hostages will soon be reunited with their families. After years of intense suffering, peace finally feels attainable. Conservative leader Pierre Paliab says,
Starting point is 00:03:05 Congratulations to President Trump on negotiating a peaceful end to the Israel-Hamas war, a monumental achievement toward generational peace. Prime Minister Mark Carney is back from a trip to Washington and he returned to Parliament Hill today. That's where he faced a barrage of questions from the opposition about his latest face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and why it didn't yield a trade deal. Tom Perry reports. If Mark Carney's meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office was friendly, the Prime Minister's return to the House of Commons and question period was anything but.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Well, Mr. Speaker, we'll go soft on him today because I know he's still recovering from surgery to have his elbows removed. Opposition leader Pierre Pauliev, mocking Carney, mercilessly, over a meeting he says delivered nothing but which Carney says made progress. The President of the United States and myself had a meeting of minds yesterday with respect to the future of the steel sector, the aluminum sector, the energy sector. But while negotiations continue, U.S. tariffs remain in place. The Prime Minister has told Canadians he will deliver results. The opposition keeps hammering him again and again with one question. When? Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:04:27 And finally, the Toronto Blue Jays are in New York tonight for game four of their division series against the Yankees.
