From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Hurland.
There is a major breakthrough tonight in the U.S.-backed plan for a ceasefire in Gaza
and the release of Israeli hostages.
Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have now agreed to a deal
that will finally end more than two years of war.
You're listening to a group of Palestinian celebrating,
in Gaza. In Chan Yunus, young men broke into song and cheers. The CBC's Paul Hunter was just in the
Middle East, and we reached him in London tonight. Indeed, there is a deal. What a moment. The Israeli
war on Hamas in Gaza now two years in a day since it began after those Hamas attacks on Israel,
October 7, 2023, is being paused. In short, it means an end to the fighting, at least for now,
and the release of all living hostages. Tonight, U.S. President Donald Trump, putting on his
truth social platform the following. I'm very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed
off on the first phase of our peace plan. This means that all of the hostages will be released very
soon and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line as the first steps toward a strong,
durable, and everlasting peace. Beyond Trump's descriptions, it's understood, the deal also includes
the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. And importantly, for the many, many hundreds of
thousands of Palestinians in Gaza in need of food, medicine, shelter, fresh water. It's also expected
aid will now start flowing into Gaza more freely. The agreement, the result of intense negotiations
between Israeli officials and Hamas intermediaries in Sharmel Sheik, Egypt, mediated by the U.S.,
and with tremendous pressure from Donald Trump to get this done. Tonight, that's happened.
Paul Hunter, CBC News, London. In Israel, tonight, celebrations broke out in Tel Aviv's
hostage square. These people started singing a prayer for peace, and reaction is slowly trickling in tonight
here in Canada. Maureen Lesham is a Toronto woman whose cousin Romi was held hostage by Hamas.
She was freed in January of this year and is alive.
I'm feeling genuinely optimistic. This will happen. You know, this new,
has brought a breath of life back into all of us for the first time in a really, really long time.
There's a sense of movement, and I see this as a universal human victory.
The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres posted on the Platform X,
I urge all concern to abide fully by the terms of the agreement.
All hostages must be released in a dignified manner.
A permanent ceasefire must be secured.
The fighting must stop once.
for all. Conservative leader Pierre Pahliav is accusing the Prime Minister of betraying Canadian
auto workers after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday failed to produce immediate
results. Well, Mr. Speaker, we'll go soft on him today because I know he's still recovering from
surgery to have his elbows removed. We haven't seen those elbows since the election.
Responding in question period, Carney insists his government is taking time to reach the best deal possible for
Canada. Our agreement yesterday, the president myself, is to focus now on steel, on aluminum,
on energy, the building blocks of our broader competitiveness, including our auto sector.
Those negotiations on autos continue.
Carney left his key minister on the trade file behind in D.C. to work on the sectoral trade deals.
And finally, we've got breaking baseball news from the Bronx.
Jeff Hoffman strikes out Cody Bellinger, and the Blue Jays have done it.
They have knocked off the New York Yankees.
They have won their first playoff series since 2016.
The Toronto Blue Jays have just won game four of their division series against the New York Yankees.
Final score 5'2.
They'll now advance in the playoffs.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Neil Hurland.
Thank you.
