Starting point is 00:00:27 A message from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Hurland. U.S. President Donald Trump says Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have agreed to the first phase of his peace deal. After three days of talks in Egypt, Hamas would release all 20 living hostages in the coming days, while the Israeli military will begin a withdrawal of its troops from Gaza after more than two years of war. The CBC's Katie Simpson has more from Washington. Peace for the Middle East. It's a beautiful phrase, and we hope it's going to come true.
Starting point is 00:01:08 U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Middle East peace talks were close to a breakthrough as he arrived for an unrelated roundtable event at the White House late Wednesday afternoon, an event that would be unexpectedly interrupted by Trump's Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Anything we should know about the Middle East? Rubio took a seat near Trump
Starting point is 00:01:27 and scribbled an urgent message on a peace of paper. I was just given a note by the Secretary of State saying that we're very close to a deal in the Middle East and they'll get a need be pretty quickly. Two hours later, Trump would announce a deal on social media saying Israel and Hamas had signed off on the first phase of the peace plan. All of the hostages will be released very soon, he wrote, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Israel and Hamas both quickly confirmed the statement. marking a new breakthrough moment, sparking hope, this may be a significant step toward bringing this conflict to an end. Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington. And we're getting reaction tonight to news of this breakthrough deal to end the war in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says, this is a diplomatic success and a national and moral victory for the state of Israel. The father of a hostage is also celebrating.
Starting point is 00:02:25 President Trump, thank you very much. For Palestinians, there is friends. hope of establishing a new Palestinian state and a chance to rebuild. Omar Omar lives in Victoria, B.C. and has family in Gaza. I'm just extremely happy that at least there is a stopping for all the madness of killing people in the Gaza Strip. My family has finally got the chance to breathe. I got the chance finally to at least breathe. And Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement tonight.
Starting point is 00:02:56 He says, I am relieved that the hostages will soon. be reunited with their families. After years of intense suffering, peace finally feels attainable. Conservative leader Pierre Pollyev says, congratulations to President Trump on negotiating a peaceful end to the Israel-Hamas War, a monumental achievement toward generational peace. Danny Breen has been re-elected as mayor of St. John's Newfoundland for a third term after winning a municipal election tonight. But a significantly lower number of voters cast ballots this time, Breen blames it on the fact a provincial election is being held next Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:03:34 It was a disappointing turnout, but giving all the things that have happened, having the provincial election and overlapping with it, I found even campaigning that there was not much interest being shown in the issues. And finally, the Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the American League Championship series. Canada's only Major League Baseball team beat the New York Yankees tonight to advance to the next playoff round. The CBC's Thomas Degler has more from Yankee Stadium.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Jeff Hoffman strikes out Cody Bellinger, and the Blue Jays have done it. The Blue Jays came out swinging, racking up a dozen hits and outscoring the Yankees 5 to 2. New York pundits predicted the Bronx bombers would cruise to the World Series, but it took Toronto four games in the best of five American League Division Series to eliminate their rivals, leaving Yankees fans stunned. Jay's slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cast in a run, after hitting three homers in three games this series. Next up for Toronto, hosting either the Seattle Mariners or Detroit Tigers
