Starting point is 00:00:26 The debater's 20th anniversary season, comedy, worth arguing about. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. There is joy today in the Middle East with Israel and Hamas agreeing to the first phase of a peace plan for Gaza. First from Han Yunus and then Tel-Manu'll have them.
Starting point is 00:00:57 First from Han Yunus and then tell us. Tel Aviv, that is the reaction as news broke overnight that an agreement has been reached on the pullback of Israeli troops in Gaza and the release of the remaining hostages. With more now from Tel Aviv, here's Crystal Gamanscing. At Hostage Square in Tel Aviv, there is singing. People are milling around. There are Israeli flags. And there is a sense of joy and calm and overwhelming relief. People have been at the square for so many hours. already talking about the moment that they heard the news, the joy they felt, and then the pause, the relief, the fear of what happens next. The next step in this process will be the Israeli Security Cabinet meeting later this afternoon. And then, of course, the government
Starting point is 00:01:47 will meet to approve this deal. And then we expect to see this first phase of the deal that was agreed to, the hostage release, the exchange of Palestinians prisoners, all to start unfolding rather rapidly, but here at Hostage Square, there is a calm, joyous feeling. Crystal Gamans Singh, CBC News, Tel Aviv. Prime Minister Mark Carney is among the world leaders welcoming the agreement. In a post on social media overnight, Carney says, peace feels attainable after years of intense suffering. Britain's Prime Minister Kirstarmer calls on a moment of profound relief. EU officials are calling the agreement a major diplomatic accomplishment.
Starting point is 00:02:29 and the UN's Antonio Guterres is promising to immediately step up relief efforts for the people of Gaza. In other news, another candidate has joined the race for the leadership of the federal NDP. My name's Teneal Johnston, and I'm running to lead this party, your party, with integrity, inclusion, and inspiration. Stand with me, join my team, and together, let's build a better future for every Canadian. Timil Johnson is the social worker and city councilor in Campbell River, BC. The NDP says Johnson is the first indigenous woman to seek the party's top job. She was the NDP candidate in the spring federal election, but she lost a conservative Aaron Gunn. Johnson joins Rob Ashton, Alberta MP Heather McPherson, and documentarian Avi Lewis as the other confirmed candidates.
Starting point is 00:03:21 The party selects its next leader at a convention in Winnipeg in March. A Hungarian novelist has won this year's Nobel Prize for literature. Laszlo Krasnhorkei, for his compelling and visionary over that in the midst of apocalyptic terror reaffirms the power of art. It's a Nobel committee honoring Laslo Krasnivorki. A 71-year-old critically acclaimed writer is known for exploring often dystopian themes. And the Nobel Committee says his bleakly funny novels can, quote, unfold in single sentences. The Nobel honors continue tomorrow with the awarding of the Peace Prize. The Toronto Blue Jays are on their way to the American League Championship Series.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Last night in New York, the Jays eliminated the Yankees, taking that divisional series opener in four games, five to the final score, with Toronto banging out 12 hits and getting some impressive work from their bullpen. Here's manager John Schneider. The guys went out and did it, you know what I mean? More so than anything, they do a really good job of managing themselves. You know, it's an unbelievable cast of character,
Starting point is 00:04:26 that can keep a group level-headed or get a group going if you need to. So a lot, if not all the credit, goes to the players. So now it's on to the ALCS. The Jays will be facing either Seattle or Detroit with game one set for Sunday in Toronto. And that is the World This Hour. Remember, you can listen to us wherever you get your podcast. The World This Hour is updated every hour seven days a week. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
