There is joy and relief across the Middle East today, as Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a peace plan. It includes a pullback of Israeli troops in Gaza and the release of the remaining hostages. Anna Cunningham has more. Singing, dancing and clapping.
Starting point is 00:01:04 As word spreads in Khan Yunus in southern Gaza, Palestinians took to the streets. Crowds gathering near NASA Hospital, an area that has seen numerous Israeli strikes. Wa'El Radwan, thank God, and the US President Donald Trump, saying this was a joyful moment. Elsewhere in Gaza, reaction from aid workers. Is this the moment? It's incredibly quiet outside. Says James Elder from UNICE.
Starting point is 00:01:34 It's the middle of the night, but also it's incredibly quiet from the skies. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has welcomed the announcement that Israel and Hamas have reached the first phase of a ceasefire deal, saying he hopes the efforts serve as a prelude to achieving a sustainable political solution. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Meanwhile, throughout Israel. That's hostage square in Tel Aviv as news broke regarding the peace agreement. The Israeli government is meeting today to formally vote on the deal if it is approved, as expected,
Starting point is 00:02:15 a ceasefire will go into effect immediately. And the Israeli military says it's already starting preparations to, quote, adjust its deployment lines. The agreement Israel and Hamas have been working on is a 20-point peace plan proposed by the United States. States. Here's U.S. President Donald Trump speaking last night to Fox News. The whole world came together, to be honest, so many countries that you wouldn't have even thought of it. They came together. The world has come together around this deal. And that's something I would say that without that wouldn't happen. Prime Minister Mark Carney is among the world leaders welcoming the agreement in a post on
Starting point is 00:02:52 social media. Carney says peace feels attainable after years of intense suffering. U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres is promising to immediately step up relief efforts for the people of Gaza. Another candidate has joined the race for the leadership of the federal NDP. Tenil Johnston is a social worker and city councilor in Campbell River, British Columbia. She was the NDP candidate in the spring federal election, but lost to conservative Aaron Gunn. Johnston joins Union Leader Rob Ashton, Alberta MP Heather McPherson, an activist Avi Lewis, as the four candidates now the race. The party selects its next leader at a convention in Winnipeg in March. Now, to baseball and the Blue Jays, they're on their way to the American League championship

Guerrero shoots it down the right field line, and that's a fair ball. When Red Hot Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in a run to open scoring, it was the first sign Yankees fans would be in for a disappointment. Toronto racked up a dozen hits, outscoring their rivals 5 to 2 and knocking out the Yankees in four games. Canadian fans who made the trip to New York thanked the team
