Starting point is 00:00:33 That's vote.org.com. Thanks for listening. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilfrey. We begin with breaking news. The Israeli government has approved the ceasefire and hostage return deal with Hamas. That's according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. Both sides have now signed on to this first.
Starting point is 00:00:58 first phase. That means a ceasefire beginning tomorrow and Israeli hostages return next week. Willie Lowry has more. Hopefully an everlasting peace. Peace in the Middle East. U.S. President Donald Trump confident the Israeli hostages will come home and the war in Gaza will end. The U.S. leader helped to broker the deal that will see 20 living hostages returned as well as the bodies of 28 more. And Israel will retreat to an agreed upon line, still holding 53% of the enclave, but cease its military campaign. Trump praised countries in the region for coming together as mediators.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Egypt and Turkey for helping us reach this incredible day. Trump said upcoming phases of the peace plan, still to be ironed out, would see the reconstruction of Gaza and hopefully the money of many nations to back it. He plans to travel to the region very soon, to take part in an official signing and to welcome the hostages back to Israel. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. Prime Minister Mark Carney has called it a day for optimism, saying he spoke with Trump during his visit to Washington
Starting point is 00:02:06 about Canada's role in the region post-ceasefire. Carney says the country is ready to step in with aid. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Canada has already put some $340 million on the table for aid in Gaza. She also said that it's still under discussion whether Canada will participate in a proposed transnational force to keep the peace in Gaza. New information has allowed Edmonton police
Starting point is 00:02:31 to narrow down the search area for a missing indigenous teenager. 14-year-old Samuel Bird disappeared in June. Police believe he's dead as a result of a criminal act and that his body was dumped in a rural area. Sam Samson has the latest. We're looking for still a needle
Starting point is 00:02:48 and a smaller haystock. Edmonton police detective Jared Bueller stands near a busy highway about 160 kilometers west of Edmonton. This area of bush and farmland is where police believe the body of 14-year-old Samuel Bird will be found. Bird has been missing since June 1st. Earlier this month, police said they were searching a geographic area of thousands of square kilometers. But within the past 24 hours, they received new information that led them here.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Bueller says they're keeping the exact location under wraps to prevent the public from doing their own searches. A hundred people traipsing through the bush right now. We want as pristine a search area as we can right now. Police say they have identified people of interest, but as of yet, no charges have been laid. Sam Sampson, CBC News, near Knighton, Alberta. Drake's lawsuit against Universal Music Group has been tossed out. A federal judge decided that the lyrics of a Kendrick Lamar disc track are opinion, not liable.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Drake sued his own record label for promoting the song, Not Like Us. The rapper claimed it contained false allegations of pedophiles, that hurt his reputation and his income. The music company denied that, and today, the judge agreed. And New York Attorney General, Leticia James, has been indicted on fraud charges, the latest Democrat and perceived Trump foe, to be prosecuted by his Justice Department. Today, I'm not fearful. I'm fearless. As Attorney General, she filed a number of cases against Trump,
Starting point is 00:04:19 including winning a conviction in a case that accused him of defrauding banks by dramatically overstating the value of his real estate holdings. In a message posted on X, James said she has done nothing wrong. These charges are baseless, and the president's own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution. The president's actions are a grave violation of our constitutional order and have drawn sharp criticism from members of both parties. James has vowed to aggressively fight these charges. two weeks ago, former FBI director James Comey was also indicted for allegedly lying to Congress. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilvery.
