Starting point is 00:00:39 The Palestinian militant group Hamas has released all 20 living Israeli hostages as part of a ceasefire deal reached last week to end the war in Gaza. In exchange, Israel is releasing 250 Palestinian prisoners and about 1,700 Palestinians detained during the war. The CBC's Crystal Comancing reports from Tel Aviv. Throughout hostages square in Tel Aviv, it is a sea of bodies, heads, telephones, flags. It is absolutely packed. Every time on the big screen mentions or puts a picture of one of the 20 living hostages,
Starting point is 00:01:18 people erupt and scream and cheer, there's music playing. People say that this is the moment they have been waiting for this. is what Israel and Israelis needed after two long years of waiting. These individuals have been in captivity for two years. Red Cross officials had said it would be unclear if they even knew that they were being released back into the hands of Israeli forces today and that their mental state, their health would all be the priority that they would be kept away and protected and given space.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Crystal Gamansing, CBC News. An U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Israel this morning. He helped broker the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. And he'll speak in the Israeli parliament shortly. Then he'll travel to Egypt to host the peace summit. Prime Minister Mark Carney will also attend that event, but neither Israel nor Hamas will be there. We're following a tragic story in South Africa. A bus veered off a road last night and plunged down a steep mountain pass, killing at least four. 42 people and leaving another 49 passengers injured. Seven children are among the dead. The bus was traveling to Zimbabwe and was carrying citizens of Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Starting point is 00:02:40 A group of seniors participated in a unique breakfast outing in Montreal, meant to help them learn how to speak French. It's part of a special program taught at a local wellness center. Gloria Enriquez reports. Ona Witty smiles after she successfully orders her book, Breakfast crepes with blueberries and French. A new milestone at 85 years young. I'm learning slowly, but I just enjoy it so much.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Witty is taking part in a novel way of learning French outside of the classroom. Statistics Canada says about 5.3% of Quebec's population can speak English but no French. The fast-track French language support for seniors program is taught at Montreal's La Salle. D&D 50-plus Center. Diane Dunin is the center's vice president. So we have different scenarios that we play out. She says they'll first practice at the center. We practice the basics of ordering breakfast or the basics of doing groceries.
Starting point is 00:03:44 And then participants go out to experience those very scenarios in real life. Florian Rica, CBC News, Montreal. The Toronto Blue Jays lost their first game of the American League Championship series last night, the Seattle Mariners beat the Jays 3-1. The CBC's Thomas Dagla was there. George Springer crushed the first ball thrown to him, hitting it out of the park as the Blue Jays took an early lead. The Mariners switch hitting star catcher Cal Raleigh responded with a solo shot of his own, and Seattle never looked back, taking game one of the American League Championship series 3 to 1. The Jays didn't appear like the same team that cruised past the Yankees in the last round.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Toronto's bats going cold, managing only two hits through nine innings. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who caught fire in the previous series, couldn't manage a single hit in four plate appearances. Next, the Jays will send rookie pitching sensation Trey Yassavage to the mound when they host Seattle for game two of their best of seven Monday evening. Thomas Dagg, CBC News, Toronto.
