This stings. This is the consequence of these Trump tariffs, this attack on the Canadian economy. And it's not just the Stalantis employees. There's going to be many associated auto parts jobs that are affected by this. The Brampton plant employs 3,000 workers who have been on layoff since last year as the plant retools. Stalantus insists it's committed to its Canadian operations with no job losses associated with the move. Delantis says it does have plans for the plant, but wouldn't elaborate.
Starting point is 00:01:29 NATO defense ministers are meeting today in Brussels to discuss the war in Ukraine. They're discussing the airspace violations by Russia amongst other issues. NATO Secretary General Mark Ruta opened today's session. This session will focus on how we will make our deterrence and defense even stronger, building, of course, on the historic decisions taken at the summit in the Hague to massively increase defense spending and defense production. The defense ministers are also looking at more military aid for Ukraine. The U.S. is considering sending long-range missiles to Kyiv.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Canada's Minister of National Defense, David McGinty, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hechtzeth, are attending today's meeting. Now, Ukraine has yet to receive the more than two dozen reasons. refurbished light armored vehicles that Canada promised the country more than two years ago. The vehicles remain stuck in bureaucratic and corporate limbo. As Murray Brewster reports, the project is no longer listed on a federal export registry, and officials refused to explain why. In late 2023, the Defense Department delivered 25 of its decommissioned labs to Armitac survivability near London,
Starting point is 00:02:42 with the promise of refurbishing them for donation to Ukraine. Two years later, no rebuilds. Labs, and it appears, no more contract. The deal is no longer listed on the Canadian Commercial Corporation's quarterly disclosure report. Both the corporation and D&D refused to say what the status of the contract might be. It makes no sense. James Bazan is the conservative defense critic who is puzzled by the controversy. It flies in the face of the promises that have been made by the liberals to support Ukraine. It flies in the face, and Mark Carney's promise to use the defense industry to rebuild and strengthen Canada's economy.
Starting point is 00:03:23 This deal is covered by a federal non-disclosure agreement, which partly explains the commercial corporation and D&D's refusal to discuss it. Bottom line, though, Ukraine is still waiting. Murray Brewster, CBC News, Ottawa. Israel says the raffa crossing into Gaza will remain closed to humanitarian aid until Hamas releases all the deceased hostages. Hundreds of trucks line up at the border between Gaza and Egypt barred from entering the Beliger territory. The border is reopening only to permit the movement of Gazans.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Only 8 of 28 deceased hostages have been returned to Israel so far, though Israel's military says one of the four released yesterday date is not the remains of a hostage. Liran Berman's two brothers were part of Monday's exchange. But even in this moment of joy, we cannot forget those still waiting, families who are still living. and the 24 hostages, we have not yet come. Now, we must bring everyone back. That is the only way this story can truly end. There's a tentative deal this morning between Ontario and striking support staff at the province's colleges.
Starting point is 00:04:33 More than 10,000 workers walked off the job five weeks ago. Their union says members will get a look at the agreement later today and should be back on the job by tomorrow. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Claude Fag.
