Starting point is 00:00:36 mark carnie says the federal government will table a bill to make it tougher for violent offenders to get bail that proposed law will be introduced next week it comes as the liberal government faces pressure from the conservatives and the provinces to get tough on crime david thurton is more we're strengthening the criminal code to get tough on bail and sentencing Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government is making changes to the bail system, especially when it comes to violent and organized crime. Like violent auto theft, break-and-enter, human trafficking, sexual assault, and extortion involving violence.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Carney says the proposed law will create new reverse onus bail provisions. It will no longer be up to the crown to prove why someone should stay behind bars. It will be up to the accused to prove to the court why they can. be trusted to be released. The new bill, Carney, says, will also allow for consecutive sentencing, which could mean more time behind bars for some, and restricting conditional sentences that allow sexual offenders to serve time at home. Starting point is 00:01:45 There seems to be a difference of opinion between the Prime Minister and Ontario's Premier on how to deal with the U.S. on trade. Doug Ford has called on Carney to hit back after Carmaker Stalantis' announcement it is moving some production out of Canada to the U.S. But Carney suggests an escalation of the trade war is premature. We start from a position where we have a better deal than any other country in the world with the United States. 85% of our trade is free. But we're also very focused on the fact that we can make it better.
Starting point is 00:02:18 We will do everything we can to make it better. There's times to hit back and there's times to talk and right now is the time to talk. Carney also says Delantis assured him it is looking to produce a different model at its idled plant in Brampton, Ontario. One of the hockey players charged in the London-Ontario sex assault case has signed with an NHL team. Goaltender Carter Hart is joining the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Hart and four other players were acquitted last July when a judge decided the complainings allegations lacked credibility. The NHL says Hart and the others are not eligible to play until December 1st as part of the league. reinstatement process, two of the players have signed with teams in Europe.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Conservative leader Pierre Pollyev's leveled serious accusations against the RCMP, accusing the force of covering up for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Today, the top mounteat, excuse me, responded. Catherine Tunney tells us what he said. The leadership of the RCMP is frankly just despicable when it comes to enforcing laws against the liberal government. Conservative leader Pierre Palliev recently took aim at the RCMP's independence. accusing the National Police Force of covering up for the liberal government.
Starting point is 00:03:28 In an interview recently posted on YouTube, Pollyev says the RCMP failed to do its job, investigating former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, when he violated the Conflict of Interest Act in both the Aga Khan and S&C Lavalant Affairs. These would normally have led to criminal charges, but, of course, the RC&P covered it all up. Don't take any orders from any political individual.
Starting point is 00:03:50 RCMP Commissioner Mike Duane fired back Thursday saying there was no political interference and invited Polyev to sit down with RCMP senior management. Catherine Tunney, CBC News, Ottawa. Donald Trump says he will have another meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try and resolve the war in Ukraine. The U.S. President says talks will happen in Hungary, but he did not mention a date. His announcement comes after a lengthy phone call that both sides are calling productive. Trump had expressed frustration with Putin over Russia's ongoing attacks in Ukraine
Starting point is 00:04:22 despite Washington's attempts at diplomacy. He's currently considering Ukraine's request for American long-range missiles.
